Re: cheapest place to buy grains?
Hello all, was wondering who in the us has the best price on rye & barley. I have been given a URL that has reasonable-ish shipping and the price seems right. I have NOT ordered from them myself but sure need to. These are malted grains http://www.austinhomebrew.com/index.php?cPath=178_21_71_42...

Re: Smell and taste tests
Funny, I just have trouble telling what will be good later on based on what it taste like now. Everything taste harsh when green. Maybe the water I am using. I have town water but the choline is not bad at all. I am sure there is some iron. Should I be using store bought spring water, distilled wate...

Re: Idea, tell me why it won't work
I am a rookie myself but I would say 3/8 as well the most important thing is to keep it bigger before it gets cool. It takes a large volume of vapor to equal only a little bit of liquid. As far spending the money for a cooler not necessary. A five gallon bucket is free from many sources and five gal...

Bogger I got mine from Mile high. I would feel confident they were copper since they are from someone in the business.

Re: Too Conservative HELP!
I have ran Woody juice over and it turned out nice. Still smells like UJSSM is supposed to and not woody. Lost all of my beautiful color however. :( It is now at 64% and airing. I did start picking up the woody taste and smell again in the tails at around 40%. I kept it separate just to see what it ...

Re: Is my leibig big enough or am i just splitting hairs?
I just re-distilled my 2.5 gallons of woody tasting UJSSM  and after I got to the tails and was ready to quit I did a test to see what mine did. (For the tails I did turn up the heat a bit.) I then turned the gas full throttle and mine did not knock down everything either and the water started...

Without sounding like a ki$$ a$$ I try to read everything within reason that some of you guys write even if it does not apply now. It will at some time I am sure. For example I was re-reading a post by my buddy Dnunderhead and he said the opposite of what I thought about the woody taste. Looks like ...

Stripping run instructions: 1) Charge boiler with wash 2) Turn on heat 3) At initial boil, adjust heat to match condenser's max efficiancy. 4) Collect everything that comes out, down to about 20% ABV. Understanding I am a rookie myself!! Hawke told you exactly what you need or want to know :esurpri...

I think I took out too much foreshots myself. My collected keeper jug is only 40%. I was putting the jars of Foreshots into my feints jug because most were too harsh tasting. Dnunder told me that it all has a rough bite when it is green. I will not throw so much into the feints on my next run...

Re: What is this hole for?
Just try not to do as I did. I did not realize how fast my column would heat up and how much liquid could be present. I started mine up for the first time and did not turn the heat back and shot liquid out the top. I condensed the vapors but had so much vapor pressure coming up the column the liquid...

I do not understand the answer given or I did not pose the question properly. Let us assume I have five gallons of UJSSM pot material it has already been stripped of good corn alcohol. After it cools off somewhat then I pour my feints jug into the pot. Let's just say two gallons of heads and tails a...

Vodka to UJSSM?
May very well be a silly question but.... What would be the outcome of pouring one gallon of my vodka into the pot of UJSSM wash. Would it be almost the same as UJSSM licker or crap or hey that will work, maybe or your an idiot!

Re: My first spirit run and photos
I just asked that same question today and the answer was a fish aquarium heater, heating blanket, heat tape or if not too cold just wrap in a blanket and let the yeast generate some heat. I am not sure what I will do. Most likely I will try to use fish heater but have not considered how to get the c...

Hack I just added several heaping teaspoon fulls to my 15 gallon UJSSM third generation because it appeared to stop and the pH was about a 3. I read and read these forums and was finally confident enough to try adding the baking soda which I had put in the oven to convert to sodium carbonate for my ...

My first spirit run and photos
Hi guys finally did my first Spirit run after several stripping runs. I did three gerber runs stripping to get to the Spirit run. Had some problems but think I have a plan to correct all of them. Mashman mine looks similar I went from a two inch elbow then straight to 1/2 then then a 1/2 elbow to get the 45 degree down angle into liebig for thirty or so inches. Re: Spirit run questions?
Hey I know the answer to this one. Add enough water to make the abv 40%. So It will not burn in case of a leak or spill. I would say that the minimum left in the pot should be 2 gallons. I just did my spirit run and I had my column packed too tight. Be fore warned that when the temp comes up it come...
