question for the rum makers

I have about 5 gallons of stripped rum and am getting ready to do a spirit run . I was wanting opinions on which way those of you who make rum think you get the best result . Do you mix the strip with distilled water or do you mix with another batch of wash for the final run ? I am trying to get a m...

Re: something that was said on moonshiners

Oh gosh yes! I believe everything that is said on totally scripted "reality shows". [/sarcasm] Good God man, some critical thinking is in order! Unless you have a valid distilling permit from the TTB, and a State license for distilling alcohol, you are committing a felony. This is exactly...

something that was said on moonshiners

I was wondering if anybody knew this to be accurate or not . It was said on an episode last week that distilling was a misdemeanor but distribution was a felony . Does anyone know if this is true?

Re: 1st time mash complet fail...

When I do a corn mash I use 8 pounds corn to 3 .5 gallons water and dont have the problems with the super thick mashes that you guys seem to be having, and when its not so thick it also helps with scorching. After reading everyones input in this thread , the only difference I see with what you guys ...

I bought one of these awhile back . He has another up for auction now .Took a bit to get rid of the olive smell but it works great and the seal on mine is air tight. http://cgi.ebay.com/20-Gallon-Plastic-Food-Grade-Barrel-AIR-WATER-tight_W0QQitemZ140296799034QQihZ004QQcategoryZ38172QQssPageNameZWDVW...

Re: Newbie just starting out. Would like to hear your opinions.

When you rack , you are "siphoning" the liquid off the spent yeast, also reffered to as the "lees" . When you do this you want to put alot of effort into pulling off just the liquid and not the solids , which rest on the bottom but will easily go back into suspension with some sh...

Re: Pigroasters new optimal profile for oak aging sticks

Pinto , have you tried pigroasters profile with your charring method ? If so did you like the results . I would think that if combining the two methods you would get alot more contact area( from the extra square inches in the profile and the micro cracks from the high heat toast ) which should speed...

Re: Triple distilling

That was the basis of my question , which I guess I did not put very clearly and and therefore got a well deserved spanking  . It seems that traditional Irish whiskey is triple distilled , but in running 3 times , even through a pot still I would think that you would lose much of the flavor pr...

Triple distilling

When tripple distilling ( I am going to try making an irish whiskey ) do you run the second pass slow like a regular spirit run or somewhere in between a stripping and spirit run? And what do you collect down too on the second run? 30 % ? Also I notice that most recipes call for both barley malt and...

I use a liebig , 28 inches of 3/8 inside 3/4 . I like it because , as some others have said ,I can keep my set-up up higher on my brewstand and dump into my parrot and still not be on the ground. It has kept up with all the stripping runs I have done with no problem . I can say the pump , although n...

Very true, I suppose the big guys' decades of experience and loads of equipment helps them some with the consistency thing, but there are a ton of variables. Knucklehead , you can avoid a stuck sparge using your rye malt by adding in rice hulls. They are readily available , dont add any flavor and and act like the barley husks as far as making a filter bed . I use them when mashing wheat as it is like rye , no husks.

fermenting on the grain

Does the ABV of your mash go up if you ferment on the grains or do you produce a wash with more flavor? With my beer setup I can mash in a tun then take the runnings and ferment them . I would think that you would come up with a much cleaner mash in a shorter amount of time. Is my thinking flawed he...

strange blue tint

I just ran the first batch through a new pot still , just for cleaning purposes. It was a sugar wash that had sat way to long. The distilate came out with a very faint blue tint to it. It was more noticeable in the low 180's and got less visible in the 190'sMy other potstill ran clear the first time...

You should probably rethink the silicone seal. Depending on how you do it , it will be in direct contact with the hot alcohol vapours.
