Thanks. Enjoyed the first one. The others will make for good viewing during a still run or two.

Re: Dissolving sugar vs. Dumping into fermenter
I routinely invert the sugar for any sugar wash - almost always All-Bran. It just works for me and my ferments are very consistent every time.

Sure, put the feints in your sugar wash for the strip run. That's what I do.

Re: Question about baking soda
Just for what it is worth, I sometimes get a very light blue tint after adding baking soda to my low wines (All bran wash). This is done in a stainless pot, no plastic. I dilute to ~30% with my well water and have no real idea what effect that has, if any. I think I add about one tbsp per gallon. I ...

Re: How Many set up the Night before?
For spirit runs I set up the night before, because my Boka takes a good long day to run through 10 gallons of low wines.
If it is a strip run or a pot stilled liquor I don't bother setting up early.

I switched out my copper mesh for lava rock and am happy with the result. Yes, you do need a screen or something at the bottom of the column. I cut a disk out of copper sheet and drilled a bunch of holes in it. You'll need to come up with a way to hold the screen in the tube. Mine just rests on the ...

Same dilemma here. Mow or still work. Still work won out and I started two 5 Gal. batches of wash. Rain predicted tomorrow but that's OK since I have a long Boka spirit run on tap. Might get to mowing Sunday. Or not.

Personally I use a medium char on the oak sticks I use for my apple brandy. You could try one jar just toasted and one toasted and charred and see which way you like it.Diesel410 wrote:Thanks fellers. But do I need to char my oak? I would think for brandy just toasting it would be bettee

Re: well...what else is there to do in Iowa?
Welcome GG,
Gin is a good quest. It is my favorite, but I have not yet been able to come up with just the right mix of botanicals. My method is to make a good neutral running Rad's All Bran through a reflux still then re-running it through a pot still with a gin basket in the riser.

Re: Nuke Aging and Proof Drop
Thanks all. I've done the nuke thing a number of times but this is the first time I've checked the before/after proof. I do routinely cap the jars immediately and let the vacuum build. I like hearing the lids on the Ball jars pop. I will hold the peak temp down a bit on the next batch and see what h...

Nuke Aging and Proof Drop
I have a newly minted batch of pumpernickel rye that I am nuke aging prior to barreling. The white whiskey after cuts measures 63% ABV but after two nuke cycles it measures 57%. I am careful to keep the temp of spirit under 160F during the microwave sessions so I don't think I am cooking off the alc...

Re: Backset - how can I use it
I use some backset in most of my washes to help keep the Ph in a reasonable range. If making a flavored spirit like whisky or brandy I use some backset to dilute the low wines to around 30 percent for the spirit run. The only thing I check for is mold growing in it. If it has mold I dump it. Keeping...

Re: Rye bread whiskey
I did a spirit run on this recipe last weekend. I saved a bit of the hearts for drinking white and am nuclear aging the rest with toasted & charred white oak and it will then go into a 5 gallon twice used barrel at around 63 percent ABV. I have enough to just fill the barrel. The unaged white do...

Since you are going to do a few UJSSM washes anyway, consider substituting half the corn with cracked rye for a pretty passable faux rye whiskey.

My wife has noted that my brandy and my UJSSM based rye will occasionally cloud up if if she lets a bit sit in the bottom of the glass overnight. It doesn't always happen, but sometimes. We've not been able to come up with a reason. I think it may depend on the humidity level in the house but I have...

Re: Other Brands for All Bran?
I have always used either Millville (Aldi's house brand) or Meijer's house brand "bran and whole grain wheat flakes" with good success. 1/2 box (9 0z.) per 5 gal. wash. I also add one crushed multi vitamin tab. That's it for nutrients and it has always been plenty. Never felt the need for ...
