Re: The USS I AINT SCARED
"bet it sucks that boiler dry of alcohol in no time flat. " Id say not.Id say a bit more reflux.the cap or in this case the column is large so more vapors are avalabol but the take off point is not and that determines how fast you can remove the vapors./product. sorry guys but I disagree....

Re: The USS I AINT SCARED
I think the only thing you will change is a larger boiler. Your gonna suck that badboy dry pretty fast I think. Great build it should work very very well.

Re: 6 plate flute
Hey guys, I'm glad you were able to get such a great still head built. The commercial stills I see have a lot smaller take off coming off the column. My question is a 2in elbow needed or just because it looks really cool? Would a 1 1/2 or 1 1/4 work just as good? Thanks you could use a smaller take...

Re: 6 plate flute
Sweet. I have still envy. Are those perforated plates or bubble? I saw some controversy about which are better to use. How many plates would you use for whiskey? Is four too many? Thanks. Those are perf plates. I would suggest 4 if all you want are whiskey type products. You will be very suprised a...

Re: Plates vs. packing
with a 4 plate column you can achieve 88-90% ABV but still carry some flavor. With a 6 plate you can make a very nice neutral and it will run at 92-95%. When you get to above 92% the flavor is for the most part stripped. The biggest benefit to plates vs. packing is 1. you don't have to clean the pac...

Re: Flute Modification for Vodka
Why even have a down comer tube on the first plate? Just gotta have some kind of way to drain back in case of an emergency type situation. Thats what the over sized first plate does....Can hold enough liquid to prevent draining alcohol back and also prevent water from draining back to further dilut...

Re: Flute Modification for Vodka
I disagree with the smearing theory. I get some very very good neutral. I do get very little tails but it is because it has been separated by the dephlegemator. I have several customers running 6 platers for neutrals and as far as I know they are very very happy with theirs. did you use bubble caps ...

Re: Flute Modification for Vodka
I dont experience smearing of tails in the hearts when I run. I dont push it really hard though. I can run a gallon per hour and when my product starts to get to tails the stream just starts slowing down. If I just leave it alone it will actually slow to a drip. No smearing at all. With that being s...

Re: Flute Modification for Vodka
At that time the plates will start to shut off from the bottom and work there way up. I believe this behavior is also exemplified and telegraphed to the business end of your still by the "sweet spot" dephlegmater adjustment,,,, that in essence shuts down output when all of your useable al...

Re: Flute Modification for Vodka
I have found that if you can find the sweet spot on your heat. you can almost keep the plates pretty even until you start running out of alcohol. At that time the plates will start to shut off from the bottom and work there way up. I think it is the increase in vapor temp. what do you think is happe...

Re: Mile Hi 8 gallon Milkcan still
RAD is right you want your water entering the bottom of the leibeg where it comes out at the top run that to your reflux condenser on the bottom and drain it out the top.
You always want your coldest water at the end of the condenser. I am sure it will work much better.

I have a customer that just emailed me. He ran his 6 plater with one of my 2 plate add ons. He says he achieved 96% ABV for a very nice neutral. Here is a pic he sent me of his rig. I must say another very happy customer.. that makes me a very happy man.

Re: sweetfeed whisky
If you run your pot still slow and steady then take your middle of the run and oak that. Remember if you run slow you have a much less chance of smearing your cuts. Patience is very important when your running a pot still., but it pays big time in the quality of your product. I think the hardest thi...

at the end of each run I normally turn of the cooling water and run some hot steam through for a few minutes. I have a column I use in my shop that has been setting for almost 2 months and it sill looks fine inside. .
Just another take on cleaning.
