Re: Plastic

I have some No 2 HDPE SPECIFICALLY MARKED AS FOOD GRADE 30 gallon barrels with screw on sealing lids, seems they would be fine to ferment in. What are the thoughts of using these barrels with an electric heating element as a still pot? I don't think they would melt until much higher temp than 200 d...

Re: How is the new Affordable health care plan going to affe

I'm not familiar with all the details but congratulations to all americans that now get access to health care  I live in Europe and as you may know we get our medical care provided by our goverments (no matter who you are, rich or poor), but has to pay a higher tax than you do instead. Is t...

Re: Vodka column progress

Yep a thermometer is probably more helpful if it's neutral vodka you want, however that doesn't look as good as your still currently does   I don't think you could hope for 4 l/h if you want it to be neutral though. Even with an 2" ARC (automatic reflux control) still packed with...

Re: Your favorite commercial drink(s)....

Lagavulin or Laphroaig when I like a little smoke, Highland Park or Glenfarclas when I just want a balanced full body, Glenlivet if I want a little smoother approach and finally a Glendronach if want a hint of sherry in my whisky. All of them are single malt whiskies btw.

I actually use whole seeds, the alcohol seems to extract the flavours pretty good anyway. So both ways are fine

Re: Akvavit

Some good reading about akvavit from Wikipedia: Akvavit or aquavit (English pronunciation: /ˈɑːkwəviːt/, /ˈɑːkvəviːt/; also akevitt in Norwegian) is a traditional flavoured spirit that is principally produced in Scandinavia, where it has been produced since the 15th century. Akvavit gets its distinc...

I think one can use 1 tsp of aniseed instead of star anise if that can't be found.

Great informative post Tater! It's best to inform new user that there is different kinds of plastic. If you tell a newbie "all plastic is bad 'cause I say so" he might not care about the types and start using PVC cans or something. With this info out there hopefully everyone avoi...

Yeah the movie itself is kind of humorous too :ewink:

Although I do think single malt can call itself traditional even though it's cask matured. I mean it's been done like that almost since before USA was born.

Re: propanol 2 in the tails

Ethanol and fusels are organic and neither of them just flows through activated carbon, don't know where this myth thats widely spread on this forum comes from? Fusel alcohols, also sometimes called fusel oils, or potato oil in Europe, are higher-order alcohols (that is, alcohols with more than two ...

Re: propanol 2 in the tails

Well that's not good for those who believe in the myth that all turbos are bad... Low gravity washes with good turbos (those without excessive amounts of nutrients) can be as good as any bakersyeast wash at the same gravity where you add nutrients yourself. Sour mash is not a way to get clean fermen...

Extra column lenght gives better separation and will help in concentrating heads and tails, which means you could increase take off speed a little bit without smearing tails in the hearts.

so mines putting out 95 to 98 percent so i dont need to filter it is that correct :econfused: Not neccessarily, that you even get 98% readings means your alcometer isn't that correct, and some ethyl acetate and propanol can smear in the hearts and an accurate alcometer will still show 95%+. Let sme...

You need to add at least one metre of packed column underneath that little stumpy CM thingy to be able to make anything close to neutral. :problem:
You can make some fine whiskey-ish product with UJSM and DWWG washes though.

rad14701. Oh yeah you said last choice, not second, my bad. I also think the best thing is to build something that can produce neutral without carbon, that's why I wrote that in my previous post. I also wrote "you need to try to get as close to azeotrope as possible in the first place to be abl...

This is the initial heating of the boiler and column without removing any product. Du...

People here talks about activated carbon like it's a shameful thing to use, kind of like masturbating in the church toilet. Well, some people don't like any flavour at all, completely neutral. And without the right equipment that can be very hard to achieve if your not satisfied with a tiny hearts p...
