Red oak is use for cabinets, furniture, flooring and plywood. It is not used to make water tight barrels because the pores are not filled as is white. I use this method and I like the taste, you may not. I have a woodworking shop and I use the planer shaving. Vodka made from sugar at around 110 to 120 proof is pour over the shavings in a quart container. Fill it full of shavings and fill it with vodka. I only have to leave it there for 1/2 hour. ...

I've mixed my stuff with gas in a milk jug. I let the water settle to the bottom and pour off the top in the lawn mower just for the fun of it. I think some gaskets do not hold up to ethanol.

Thanks for the reply. Very lonely hobby :) I have a 2" column 4' high, no packing in the post, but will try it. I have to get the column temp. over 200 F to get things started. 4 Gal. mash in 5 Gal. still. Collected two quarts in 2 1/2 hr. top proof 160 lowest 140 then it just fell quickly to 3...

3 kegs from mile high. gave 2 to my sons. 3 rd. one leaks a little and that is the one you see. Water still ,table top, also miles high. use it to make gin too. playing around a little, having fun. Sugar wash and yeast nut. chap. yeast. red star
