Re: Travel
Walking around Salzburg I found two interesting shops. My wife says I am like a magnet drawn to alcoholic establishments. The first one was a cask store and if you brought your bottle back you could have alcohol from one cask or combine alcohols. Looked like most casks were 50% and they were either ...

While in Austria try Strohs rum (carefully). The unique butterscotch flavor is amazing. Wish I could get it here. God that brings back memories of drunken nights on my adolescents. Be careful with that 80 ABV rum, it'll end your night fairly quick My German friends say it is very strong but not kno...

Re: Over thinking distillation
I agree with all that has been said. From the other side of the fence I find myself posting links or giving short answers to questions that have been discussed over and over. The comments made about learning styles is true, a lot of questions asked on the forum I have to give a lot of thought too as...

First night in Germany we went out with our friends to a local family run winery for wine and appetizers. Fun catching up after a few years apart. The family we are staying with, she is an English Teacher in Germany but back in the early 90’s we brought her to the United States as a nanny for our so...

Re: Whats your job?
Lots of fascinating jobs here and a buttload of real, honest hands on people. Great group. I’m 21 years in the US Army, followed by another 19 working for a state. Started a computer forensics company in my “spare time” during the later years and sold it 10 years later. Been retired, ran for state ...

Re: First spirit run of first all Grain bourbon
Congratulations, when I first started I would taste test with my wife women (at least my wife) had a better sense than I did. I collected a bunch of pint jars that had measurements in 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 oz increments. I never used smaller jars just collected less when getting close to the hearts and...

Re: Cigars - what are you smoking
I’ve smoked two cigars in my life. The first one as a teenager I had my dads muscle car, I had been drinking and hit a patch of ice on the road. Did a 360 lucky I stayed on the highway but puked my guts out. Fast forward to 30 years later and I smoked a cigar on the balcony of our cruise ship with m...

Welcome, all first posts must be made in the Welcome Center thread and accepted before posting elsewhere. If you made a post in the welcome on someone else’s welcome post it probably wasn’t accepted as well. Looks like you are all good to go now. Enjoy the forum.

Welcome, MooseMan hit the nail on the head, you are starting the same way I did when I first got started. I decided to build my very first still with very little experience soldering so I chose to build it starting with the easiest part to solder first. Enjoy the journey it’s a great hobby.

Re: Filling a second 5 gallon barrel
Google solera method for aging. You can use barrels or jars, I used a combination as I didn’t have 3 barrels at the time I started using the method. It’s a rotating method so you never fully empty a barrel unless you take a break from distilling.
