Re: Coffee Grinds in Mash?
I have read mixed opinions regarding the effects of caffeine on yeast... I didn't dig deep enough to discover whether anyone had determined specific level that separated benefit from determent... I'll leave that up to individual study... Pretty sure my search phrase was "effects of caffeine on...

Coffee Grinds in Mash?
Alright, maybe I shouldn't have had that third espresso this morning  ... But I'm wondering, would adding coffee grinds to the mash make the yeastie beasties happy? It is acidic, and there's bound to be some nutrients in the beans (my wife is always telling me to put 'em in the compost pile.)...

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Growing up in Western KY, I was occasionally lucky enough to enjoy moonshine that was made in the Golden Pond area (now in Land Between the Lakes). It was unlike any whiskey or vodka I've ever tasted. it was more than 100 proof (would burn blue), but smooth and slightly sweet with almost a hint of a...

Re: There has GOT to be a better way!
Everyone, Thanks for the great comments and suggestions. Got a sparging bag in the mash I cooked today; if it isn't exactly what I want, I'll try the paint straining bag from home depot next time. Easy for me to heat the wash up a bit slower, so I plan to take Dnderhead's suggestion to not worry so ...

Re: There has GOT to be a better way!
Dnderhead - Thanks for the observation that the corn I use is causing part of the problem. I hadn't thought about that - mostly, I thought abt how cheap it is compared to flaked corn from the local brew shop! Last night after ranting here, I did more searching online, and ordered a mesh bag designed...

There has GOT to be a better way!
I'm having a lot of fun making corn whiskey, but I've started to dread one step of the process: clearing the wash after fermentation. I'm doing something wrong! Here's the basics of my "technique" >Using feed store rolled corn, ground up in a blender to a course ground; >Six row barley mal...

Preparing / Cleaning a new still
What is the best procedure for preparing a new still? I've read to run regular water to check for leaks, run water mixed with vinegar to clean... I've also read comments about running a turbo yeast mash to further clean the pipes (which I'm assuming is then poured out rather than bottled). I'm sure ...
