Re: Using a swept tee in 2" VM - any effect?

Put the sweep on the bottom, you have a valve to control flow anyway so it's no biggie if it lets too much through

Re: 3" Bok?

Double helix != double wound

You could do it in 3/8" in 3". I'd go for 5/16" at least. Stuff it with mesh (cause why not). At 9" it should be sweet though :)

Re: Brass Valves

Why do you need a return to column valve as well as a take off valve? Is it so you got like RLM and LM?

I have spirals of 1.6mm tig wire inside all 5 of the tubes in my shotgun. It's an overkill piece of equipment anyway so its hard to say.. but nothing gets out, thats for sure :)

Re: Custom VM 'seagull' tee for flow direction

I ended up using head pressure, rather than flow direction. This T is sitting around in a bag as it has been since we welded it up :P Maybe I'll do something with it this weekend, would be interesting!

Re: Reflux return point

Lol. Prairiepiss has a good point, hadn't even thought of that. Some sort of catching condensate-catching device (ie slant-plate or bubble plate) will be required to direct the reflux. If you have that you may as well smash a valve on and have a LM/VM combo. Or at least a plugged take-off so you can...

Re: Reflux return point

LW - could be way off base here but - that's at the bottom of the column based on the excerpt?

What about half way up? That leaves you half-way between the two methods.. seems like it would be problematic to me?

I'm probably wrong though.. I'm okay with it!

Re: Reflux return point

What thread prairiepiss?

You want your return below your VM take-off ideally.. but not half-way down the packing o_o

On top, to be sure.

Real?

The top plate give different results?

Isn't it just vapor path - plate - vapor path - dephlegmator, no matter which way you do it?

I'm just talkin shit here but - I don't see how this would be the case? Maybe a very small difference but surely not by much?

Re: help with 3 inch stainless VM-LM design

So ethanol vapor is heavier than air. Therefore, the greater the distance between your take-off and coil condenser, the greater the weight of the ethanol pushing down on the take-off. Basically, if the distance is bigger, you can have a smaller take-off arm and achieve the same rate. Think about it ...

If your column isn't too narrow at any point, and your still doesn't leak, it will probably work.. don't get too caught up in exact dimensions, I am slowly coming around (a little :D) to rad's way of thinking in some departments.. just build it ..

I want to start building my first still, and would love any advice, suggestions, concerns etc. This might look a little extreme for a first build but I figure it might as well also be my last. My logic is there’s no point fucking around. I want to make a 3 inch vm/lm combo. The build will be all st...
