Re: Dreaded Easy Still vs Amazing Still vs ?

I wouldn’t consider an amazing still, but I started with a Megahome 585w water distiller which I modified by soldering the volatiles vent, replacing silicone and plastic spout with copper, and using a Router speed controller. It is very hard to make good cuts with such a small output, but it can be ...

Re: Getting smell out of drums?????!!!!

I had great success getting the smell of olives out of several barrels by throwing them in my pool and super-chlorinating it. A few days later I fished them out and could detect ZERO smell. A thorough rinsing and you're good to go. I'd try adding maybe 1/2 cup non-scented bleach to each and filling ...

Re: Store Bought Flavoring- Whats hot & whats not

Prestige Pastis is great if you like Pernod/Ricard, though MUCH less sugar-sweetened than the recipe calls for. IMHO it's the ONLY flavouring clearly resembling (maybe tasting even better than) the original liquor.

One part finished liquor to 5 parts 7-Up or water over a load of ice. Yum!!!

Re: Rum sugars, brown or pure cane....

In Canada and the US (and many other countries):

Light brown sugar = white sugar + added molasses
Dark brown sugar = white sugar + extra added molasses

I use white sugar and add my own molasses. It's less expensive and I get to control the taste profile.

Someday I'll get to panela.

... My question is: would this be suitable to crack corn, barley, wheat, rye for AG brewing & fermenting? And is the smallest "crack" of 2.5 mm small enough? Not sure your meaning of "corn" here :?: My guess is that you were referring to cereal grains in general. If the smal...

I, and many of us here, use LDPE or HDPE fermentation containers, but most agree that anything much above 12%abv - and that includes stripped wash - is best kept in glass or stainless.

Cereal rye is not available in feedstores in NZ? There's always the LHBS if you don't mind their prices.

Re: buying rye in New Zealand

In Canada and US "winter rye" can be bought from a feedstore. Try asking for cereal rye, ryecorn or ryegrain in a feedstore. It is a cereal grain which looks like barley - but smaller. Check that it has no preservatives/fungicides if you find it as seedstock. Ryegrass looks like lawn gras...

Re: Using Irish moss: beer vs whiskey

Yep! You might have to take it nice n' slow if you don't boil. 10 to 12 usg mash in a 20usg keg boiler gives no puke problems. Thorough degassing, a gradual ramp-up of heat and a small amount of simethicone defoaming-agent helps. No mash-out (from the first runnings) and boilers with a high ratio of...
