Re: Getting Steamed Up
Boy this is the response I was hoping for. I am wondering about the solids in the bottom, if they will be packed to hard for the steam to go through. Thinking about buying a 30 gallon ss barrel, and using it as boil pot, fermenter, still. Anything has to be easier than squeezing that slop out by han...

Re: Getting Steamed Up
Thanks guys, this it the area I want to explore. Shady, I see you and I joined in the same year, hope your not as old as I am. Michigan, my idea was to strip the low wines out, and then run them through my pot still, do you think the yeast/trub would carry though that far ?? I make some ass ki...

Re: Getting Steamed Up
Thanks for the reply Zach. I can't imagine more guys not using steam to distill, I've been straining grain and wash for so long got to be a better way. Brutal, and Michigan are you guys just cooking with steam ?? If so, how do you handle the grain left in the cooker ?? Thanks for the help The Ole Bo...

Getting Steamed Up
I’ve read everything here several times, but I seem to be missing the piece I’m looking for. My idea is to cook my grain with steam, let it cool, then pitch the yeast, and cover the pot. With a blow off hose in a bucket of water. When the yeast has finished, fire up the steam generator, and move the...

Re: Use of Hardwood Charcoal Lump for Filtering.
Charcoal by it’s self doesn’t have much cleaning ability, it’s activated carbon that does the cleaning. This is made by crushing charcoal, then heating it to a high degree, suddenly quenching it with cold water. This fractures the grains, and creates millions of cracks and crevasses where contaminan...

Re: Wheated Bourbon
I have a 15 gallon barrel of wheat bourbon ageing here, it's now one year old, and probably needs one more year to be world class. I used 20 lbs cracked corn, 5 lbs cracked wheat, 3.5 lbs cracked malt. Like my good friend Tim says, you don't need malt if your using enzymes, but I added it for flavor...

Mhusker, boy I have tried and tried to order these filters, but after about 30 minutes of farting around answering questions, I gave up. I created an account, and still they won't let me pay for the order. I wonder how these folks ever sell anything, maybe tomorrow I'll try calling the order in. A R...

Thanks for the response, the bag says " course ground ", but I have oyster shells, and will continue using that. Just interested in this form, a small 4 oz bottle of Calcium Carbonate costs $ 2.99, and a fifty pound bag of this costs $ 5.99. I might just pick up a bag, if I never use it, I...

Calcium Carbonate
While shopping at my local farm store, I came across "Sweet Barn Lime". Bag says for dairy barn cleaning. On the back of the bag it says " High Purity Calcium Carbonate ". 50 lbs bag for $ 5.99, so I wonder if this can be used instead of oyster shell ??
Thanks

Thanks for posting that video, Jason showed me one from his phone, you stirring hot juice. Great stuff. Thanks for the replies guys. I've been around longer than most of you folks have been alive, but wasn't sure about storing this dry yeast. Beer can have funny off flavors if the yeast isn't right, so I want to be careful.

Dry Yeast Storage
I store my dry distiller's yeast in quart jars, with the lid screwed on tight, but I just ordered 600 grams of dry Safale05, would it be OK to store it in the same fashion.?? I'm going to start using 05 for my bourbon, and will also use it for my beer. What say yee ole wise ones ???

Re: gonna try woods booner recipe
Tater, I do about the same thing, and I always worry about the time it takes to drain the fermenter. In my case it takes several hours, and the wort is exposed all this time, is that no problem ? You say it takes several days to drain, so is there no infection/mold starting ??

Re: GNS/Vodka on Oak Experiment
Jimbo, your my hero, I read about all your posts, but... The GNS from MGP was distilled at 190 proof, so it's got no backbone. They also sell whiskey, that by law has to be distilled at LESS than 160 proof, so it might have a little more flavor than the GNS. When I had my distillery I toured though ...

Re: Crystal malt corn
What a great idea, but I don't think corn has enough enzyme to convert it's own starch to sugar. That's why we have to use barley malt, for extra enzyme. That being said, I would love to have some carmel, crystal corn malt. Ummmmmm.

BeefBoy, there are so many variables that it would be near impossible to calculate the ferment time. Things like temp, nutrients, PH, endless list of variables.

I will be using this se...

I have six of those babies, I drilled a hole in the lid, inserted a rubber groumet for the bubbler. Then after several runs I figured out where the drain level is and put spigots in the bottoms. Only have to open the spigot and let them drain. By the way I poured water in mine with a five gallon buc...

I bought the same one ShadyLane has, not really happy with it, but it does beat a hand job !! I wish I had one of those old fashioned ones made from metal, this plastic one has a lot of spring in it, and you can't really bear down on it like I want to. Better than nothing, I guess.
