Re: Ice Bucket Challenge?

KY, My interest comes more in my question regarding members awareness of ALS. While it is good that more folks now know what ALS is, the unusual fund raiser attracted attention seeking knuckle heads. Many of them will never donate or donate ever again to any worthy cause now that they have done thei...

Has anyone here been involved in the Ice Bucket challenge?
Has it increased your awareness about ALS, MND? Anybody here donate to the cause?

I think some of you guys are missing the lesson that Bushman is offering. It is a very affordable way to make “copper wool” packing. As dense or loose as you choose to pack it.

Re: Sight glass: best place to start?

Buy copper trap adapters from Grainger.com. Shape to fit your pipe sing the end of a belt sander, solder in place before using a hole saw to gently cut the hole. Window glass works fine. I have used it many times. Good luck. I wasnt here.

Re: Glass Marbles for Reflux Column Structured Packing

Hooker, by disregarding Rads formula and using flattened marbles you change the game rules. I doubt seriously you will achieve any satisfactory results. While a smooth hard surface is not as affective as one that provides surface tension and “cling” Rad has corrected for this with greater throughput...

How are you getting stainless to release, yet continue building the coil? It may be that I'm starting with wire that is too heavy, too springy. I'm trying 0.028" SS MIG wire initially. . Welding wire will not work and is a serious pain in the ass. I learned that lesson the hard way. I had a ni...

Re: Plated column with lava rock. Whiskey and vodka.

WV You get it. BTU's in = vapor volume. It will move faster in a small pipe, slower in a larger diameter. The key is matching vapor speed to your packing or plates. Generally, slower vapor speeds will produce higher ABV. Packings are different. ie; SPP has a reported high throughput rate while remai...

Guitar master You have been holding out on us. I thought you were a Sushi chef. You are confusing me VW. Faster vapor speed equals faster take off and lower ABV if run faster than packing efficiency. Slower vapor speeds typically result in higher ABV. Lava rock works well because of high surface are...

Re: Condenser Controlled Columns

would 1500 watts be enough power to operate this? No. 1500 watts will run a two inch column if the boiler is well insulated and you have a lot of patience. This design is a three inch column. With typical packing of low performance or high performance SPP you need 16 -20 in / sec vapor speed to est...

VM, CM, LM, WTF LOL. Funny debate. Call it what you want. I love the simple concept. I think rads def is close. We all use coolant to create reflux. Any condenser capable of 100% reflux will allow for maximum efficiency of the packing or plates below it. I have always thought the simplest design wou...

Re: Hammer head thumper

Your vapor up tubes look pretty restrictive. Be careful with excess boiler pressure created there. A simple blow out cork can save your life. You really only need to direct vapor below liquid level to create a boil in your thumper. I dont think your idea will work real well but who knows. Dont forge...

Practice with a couple of them including hammering them with and without annealing and you will see how important it is to soften them up. Extra material should no...
