Re: Rum Talk......

Well, I am certainly leaving some white...

I am going to have to tinker around finding a good recipe for a darker rum too, mostly because tinkering is most of the fun to me. I really like the vanilla bean, and I am certainly going to give that a try. Will keep everyone posted on that.

Re: Rum Talk......

Spirit run on my rum is done (FINALLY!) It is pretty tasty... I am really liking the "rummy" flavor as it gets towards the tails. There were more heads than I was expecting, but the cut between heads and hearts was pretty obvious. Now I have about a gallon of cask strength rum to figure ou...

Re: What exactly is dunder?

Common usage around here seems to be the stuff left in the boiler after a stripping run of rum. But I just inferred this from context, so I might have misunderstood. Rum talk in recipe development has a TON of great info on dunder, although no straight definition that i could find. http://homedistil...

Ok, lets break things down one at a time.

You said you aren't getting anything out of your still. Have you tried running it with just water to see if it works? It is a good way to check for leaks etc.

Re: Home Depot Bucket

The white pigment they use in the white buckets is most likely titanium (or titanium dioxide to be more accurate)... but it could be something else too. But it isn't a dye. They might toss in a little blue to make them super white. I suspect food grade buckets are white to 1)make it easy to see dirt...

Also may have to do with what is available. Maybe just an effort to get something going cuz your running out of supplies or running low on cash. Molassas in my market is dear. That's why I do it. I haven't been able to find a source of cheap molasses locally, our feed store is too fancy for just pl...

hard to argue with "it's good and I like it" If you like what you have... stop... there is nothing saying you have to keep going.

Re: Rum Talk......

Ok I have results from my almost sugar wash rum... at least from the stripping run 5 gallons of wash @ a little under 9% yielded a gallon of low wines, at about 35% These were very rough numbers b/c I didn't do a great job of recording things on that wash It tastes like pretty bad rum at this point....

and if your not worried about poisoning yourself (or are doubtful that there is anything poisonous in rubber to worry about) you will make rubber tasting liquor . You could ask my grandfather about that one.... he used a rubber hose to connect the boiler to condenser. This was back when rubber was t...

What lessons have you learned from distilling?

Hey all, thought it would be fun to have a lessons I have learned from stilling thread in here. 1. Do your research, I have a pretty nice little pot still thanks to a lot of reading on here 2. Just because you have done a lot of research doesn't mean you KNOW squat. Book learning is great and all bu...

Re: Wood in the hot still

Hemlock wood is different than poison hemlock (a shrub/herb) wiki link for the tree http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuga ... so it isn't going to kill you like socrates. It is too resinous to be good for what you are thinking however. I think straining is the winner, it could be a bit of a pain, but s...

Can you have too many buckets?

Anyone else always seem to need one more bucket than they have?

I am thinking of buying a bunch from a supplier just to have enough to have a couple projects going at once. Of course I also want a couple carboys so I can see things happening, but they are spendy.

My first...cough syrup??

Well for my first run I ran wine, which I talked about in another post... I took the "brandy" from that and followed the recipe for strawberry panty dropper. It worked great, however.... the brandy that I thought wasn't great got worse for sitting around. way too much heads so my end produ...

Re: questions about this recipe

I think what is missing is something to turn the starches in the corn etc into sugar. If you were to add some 6 row malted barley it would have the enzymes needed to help convert the starches. At least that is from my limited understanding of the whole mashing process

Hi all, I am very new to distilling in general, but decided to try a rum first instead of just a plain sugar wash because it seemed more interesting. Looking at everything I could find for a VERY simple ingredients list;I kind of made a modified birdwatchers sugar wash... Here is what i did. 8lbs br...

flour paste (dough actually) will seal just about anything. It sure is a pain to clean up though, and you have to re-apply it every run.

It is possible to solder stainless so that could be an option.

That's a nice lid stiffening solution, orpheus16... Glad to see your resourcefulness... You'll get a better feel for cuts when you run a true wash through your rig... Sounds like you're hooked... Thanks, that makes up for the "oh crap I wasted my money" moment when i opened the box"....

I use a knife to cut the paste instead of just prying the lid off to try and minimize that. I am not surpri...

Next step was to find something else to run through it... seeing as how I didn't plan ahead enough to have a wash all fermented up; I found some old wine that either didn't age well or I didn't like... along with a jug of cheap wine someone left here it made up 10Liters http://i52.tinypic.com/apbigz...

Ok so this project started back before Christmas, and I just got all of it put together. Re: Man, I fugged up! Brass Vs. Copper

It is Probably common brass which usually contains less than .07 % lead it could also be navel brass which is similar. It would almost certainly be fine to use but without testing there is little way to know. Having said that, if you have the copper why not make sure it is absolutely lead free. My o...
