Re: alcopop
ouch! ok, I'll take good note of your comment.. let's say I use only PET bottles (oh dear! here comes the PET debate!). Seriously, I understand your point about the glass and I cringe, but like I said, the goal is to regulate, try to emulate beer drinking if you will... I'll probably end up pre-mixi...

alcopop
Hey guys, With summer coming and my tendency to mix my drinks on the heavy side, I thought I would try and get a recipe for some kind of alcopop (smirnoff ice, hard limonade, bacardi breezer, whatever) and if I have a good recipe, I will pre-bottled 100 beer bottles and distribute freely around the ...

Re: from water heater to milk can
thanks rad well, I never thought it was related to that choke point but reading your message I remember that once (on about 30 runs), I put too much mash in the water heater and it was literally shooting out the top (I'm taking about a 5 foot column here, I never understood the physics of how this l...

Re: from water heater to milk can
ok, maybe this one will get an answer, I'm using a PDA-1 (3/4 NPT connector at the base of the column). Should I try and get rid of this 3/4 inch choke and fit it properly to the milk can (a straight 2" opening) ? I've read somewhere that this choke to 3/4 of an inch has an incidence, I don't u...

from water heater to milk can
Guys, I'm gonna ditch my water heater (I know most of you hate this method anyway) to tell you the truth, I've been using it for years and it's starting to look rusty and old plus I can never be sure how clean it is inside... Anyway, I'm probably gonna buy a milk can from hillbilly stills http://www...

Re: water heater (as per Ian Smiley)
I use a small water heater as my boiler. Bought mine new for $140 (it's a 43L tank) And a PDA-1 with extension as the column on top of it. (You can't get more Ian Smiley than that) Things I like about a water heater, the conversion is pretty easy, unscrew the anode (or cathode, whatever) on top of t...

goinbroke2, your post is interesting, $5000 you say... I was reading about the excise act of our beloved federal government and this is what I found: http://lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/E-14/page-3.html#anchorbo-ga:l_II" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow here...

Re: help needed - completely manual operation
Guys, thanks again I'm just getting back to this whole thing after a quick stint a couple years ago so I may be slow but I just realized something.. to answer the question, no I was not using any type of control with the 1500w element, and this may well be why I needed so much pressure, with the 150...

Re: help needed - completely manual operation
Hi guys, I doubt that gravity would be enough, the first couple of runs I used an aquarium pump (more like a pond pump) and it was not pushing enough water to cool the still down enough (vapor coming out the top). Of course this was with a 1500W element, so I guess I could take more time, work the f...

help needed - completely manual operation
Hi Guys, I bought a PDA-1 a couple years ago (I know, I know), used it a couple time with a water heater, it was ok but I never found the right spot at my place (no garage) so it's not doing much nowadays I'm up there in Canada, automn is here already and I want to set up a manual operation up in th...

vapor escaping at the top
Hey hoochinoo, I have the same problem on my PDA-1 but I already have a scrubber stuffed in there and it's not enough... My problem was that the 1/4 ID copper is so small and so long that the cooling water needs to be pressurized to flow through it at a good enough rate to absorb the heat. Anyway, u...

it slowly looks like it's not the coolest idea ever... I thought about the exhaust fans, that's a serious problem cause at the rate the sugar is fermenting, the CO2 is gonna leave the place pretty quickly with these fans on... We'll try it anyway, we'll try to isolate it to one part of the greenhous...

killing two birds with one stone
One of my friend has a little greenhouse and last week he told me he's going to setup a small CO2 system based on fermenting sugar in a 2L bottle and then throw it away to be replaced when it stops bubbling.. I said "WHAAA?...." I think you know where I'm going with this... He tells me thi...

chitosan clearing
Hi Guys, I'm new here, I'm trying to get back into the hobby after 15+ years since I last used a still... I bough a pack of SuperYeast at my local wine shop, it comes with a chitosan clearing solution, should I use it or not? I know distiller's yeast clears less than other yeast but I plan to make v...
