The parent site link in the header up above is great, but you listed off 3 of the main topics on this forum. A simple pot set up, see pot stills, and the Uncle Jessie topic will get you going well.

Oranges and UJSSM

Had a half gal of ujssm sitting around, so I did this. Put 6 smallish oranges, a tbl spoon of vanilla, bout third cup honey, and a half cup of condensed milk in the vita mix. Whipped it up good and added the ujssm. It smells like an orange julius. Very cloudy so it went out side in the snow for a fe...

Re: I "had" an empty fermentor.

I racked this after the sg went below 1. The smell still was very light and the finished taste too. Just now finished stripping it. I did a slo strip close to a spirit run. The heads tasted almost like I didnt clear well, burnt yeast, but very slight. Very lite smell. The heart portion was very good...

Husker, I tried a method posted here by myles and another or 2,,, refers to a book,, scotch thing,, shows up in a search. myles, I used water to dilute for separation. How can a body tell when the separation vessels should be dumped? Smell, visual? OK,,so in go the feints, use wash to dilute strip f...

Re: Hydroseparation

Is that what u asked?

Re: Hydroseparation

I had about 15 gallons of UJSSM strip, fresh and the now cleared, colored stuff I wrote about awhile back. In glass carboys, diluted to under 27 abv, sat for 3 days or so, siphoned the middle third from each carboy, ran that third on pot still, taking only down till I felt the tails were tasting too...

Re: I "had" an empty fermentor.

Comming up on 48 hours on this ferment. Started off a little slower than UJSSM, but only a couple hours. Very noticeable is the lack of odors, very faint smell at first, like a very light UJSSM, now is perking along with a very light floral/boiled egg (not rotten and not fruity) scent, much much fai...

Hydroseparation

I just tried hydroseparation and I do think it worked out well. The pot run on apprx 5.5 gals came out tasting nice.

Is there anything good I can do with the remaining 11 gals of 27 abv. Run it? Dump it?

Is it worth while to run the heads and tails from the run through a column?

Re: Blue Distillate Dangerous?

So, I put about a cup of lemon juice (cause I have no real acid) in the carboy, let it sit a few days, nothing changed color or fell out, so I diluted to 27 abv, let sit for hydro separation, and it all seem good after the pot run, tested a sample for any futher percipitate and all well. I believe m...

Re: A quick Chemistry Question

When I do a charcoal filter run, the best results are when a HOT section of the tube follows down with the point where the alc. was first introduced to the water in the filter, the whole tube doesnt heat up, just about a 3" section. When the first filtered alc. exits, there is no more heat for ...

Re: I "had" an empty fermentor.

T'was the only yeast in the house, and 2 other fermenters will be "open" this week, so I was trying to make a -least ingredients possible- use up what was laying around- wash. Only about 10 oz of trub/yeast mix went into bucket. Have done many column runs with UJSSM, no flavor problems wit...

I "had" an empty fermentor.

Have stocked up a few gallons of UJSSM, so thought I would try to make some neutral wash. I only had one package of Vodaka Yeast with Ag. I made a starter with that one pack with the intention of making three, 25L washes. Boiled and strained one half gallon of UJSSM mixed grain trub, added one each ...

If you were close, I would trade you half for half some of my stripped UJSSM.

It is so easy having fermenters going and just havent gotten around to doing anything but strip, in the stillin' fashion, of course.

Re: Converting hotplate.

I used a hotwired 1500w plate for a couple years till I switched to gas, it always ran safely. But, after running the gas way down low, I realized 1500w was too much for what I feel is a good speed for a 5 or 6 gallon spirit run. And it is not enough to strip a wash in a convient time frame. Just my...

Re: Blue Distillate Dangerous?

My spirit was not even close to the sample/example above, was much lighter than the back ground color of this page. Is clear now and I have tried a couple of things on samples to try to get color to reappear or something to condense out and so far it stays clear.

Re: Blue Distillate Dangerous?

Well, I beleive I found the cause,, the worm doesnt drain completely (yes I do flush out and shoot air through it when done, but evidently too many low spots) and that corrosion is the cause. Have soaked on more salt and soda and no green left. I will run it through pot and leibig and salt and soda ...

Your design is like a store bought CM. BH, MH, and others. Unlike yours, those store bought CM dont have a valve in the output that makes a closed system, like yours does. And they have a type of condensor near the top of the colum. The condensor in the top of the reflex colum runs cooling water thr...

looks real cool and no doubt will work fine.

Myseff and many others like to,,mmmmm,,,dick around with or "improve" the colums we have, with copper, and for some, ss, is real easy to do. Adds another bit of interest to being out in the shop.

Re: Yields and Still Issues?

Dont know if Im qualified to post to a Novice Distiller, but you had no answer yet. A 9% wash is fine. Save your strips up as long as you can stand it,to about 75% capacity of your pot, so you dont have to run as often, and i find big spirit runs are easier to make cuts on. Running a wash, the abv, ...

Searches for blue, crystal, and blue crystal, come up, as interpreted by meself, that blue is bad. Unlce J says that. No consensus as to precisely what it is or the cause or cure. Nutrients in wash, hi temp runs, resulting in amonia and copper are the most suggested causes for the color. Several mem...

Re: Blue Distillate Dangerous?

I had about 5 gal of strip sitting in half gal jars for about 2 months, uncovered, it looked normal. I dumped it all into a carboy to add baking soda and salt to it, going to make some neutral. So, I then put my air hose (copper tubing) in it and gave it about a 10 minute blast of air to mix things ...
