Re: My New Worm Barrel
i was just pricing STAINLESS STEEL drums the other day and the price of $700.00 per each came up... hard to believe the price of $10.00... if so, i recommend buying them all and start your own resale business for a short time.

I could not read the length of copper from where it meets the boiler to the elbow where you have the thermometer... so i won't be able to comment on that. If i were you, i would lose the thermometer, you don't need it... apply heat to the boiler and touch the plumbing and you can feel the heat trave...

Re: Thoughts on/about Design
The boiler and your source of heat is going to be important to drive the system. I think, regardless of the column size you would need a good boiler and a source of heat. In your first picture that upside down salad bowl, why can't you find a large pot, say a 5 gallon one with a lid, cut out the lid...

Re: storing new still question
I would recommend boiling some water and running it through. In my pot still, i have a total of 14 feet of copper connected without a break... i just run the hot water in one end wearing gloves, as it gets pretty hot, i run the boiling water right through it and out the condenser end.

When I decided to make Kambucha I bought a bottle and poured it into some tea and two years later my culture is still going strong.... I was wondering if anyone has tried to use either unfiltered sake, miso paste, or soy sauce for the Koji source in a similar manner. (non pasteurized of course)? If...

Then maybe there ...

Re: "Your still is too small!"
i have a 5 gallon boiler and after using it a while am finding it small for the effort. On the other hand, i think for a novice that i was when i started it may have been too much bite to take at one time. At the beginning, i thought about going with a 15 gallon setup, propane and the works and thou...

Making Sake
Hi folks, The following is a method I downloaded from a web site on the internet some time over a year ago on making sake. I have tried this recipe over ten times and it has produced the same consistency every time. Over time, I experimented and made some minor adjustments and I hope to share them w...

Nice rig.
If I can recommend,
- make a cross brace where you can clamp it to the handles on both sides. I use a piece of wood that goes across. That way you don't have to be using all of those clips.
- are you using something like flour dough to seal the lid while operating the still?
enjoy.

That is pretty expensive. Go to a feed store and get 10 times that weight for 10 to 13 dollars.

Sounds elementary.
Is there a way to know or measure the starch content in the mash before applying the enzymes to then be able to determine effectiveness.
Is this a valid question?

galv. floor flange which i have read is bad what should i use? You definitely want to get rid of that galvanized-- it will rust. the condensor to cool It does not matter. You want it cooler to knock off the vapors. What is the temp of the water supply? I would also seal the lid of the boiler with f...

I use electric. If I was to cut the arm, the thumper would be about 15 to 18 inches away.

There are some good points here and they make sense. - Yes, I do get an increase in the volume of liquid in the thumper with the measured ABV% I provided. However that is diluted in the overall volume. Not sure if it would make sense to search and calculate in reality how much hooch I lost. On the o...

Imagine having to buy insurance for it. Brewing beer and wine is totally a different process and is rather safe. I do not believe t...

Re: I built my first still and need help!
It tastes really strong, so I'm guessing its about 50-60%. My advice, please do not try the raw hooch if you don't have an alcoholmeter. It can burn your insides. If you want to keep it cheap and simple, for less than $20USD, you can purchase a meter and a glass container and test your hooch as you...

I processed the wood into 7 inch long and about 1 to 2 inches wide splits, baked in oven for about an hour and scorched the wood black using the torch I use for soldering copper, then stored in with some hooch in glass jar. After a couple of weeks, I can smell and taste some mellownes...
