Do I have a BOMB???

I'm currently running my low wines for whiskey. 8 gallons. However, I didn't delute it. All I'm running is from the 1st run. Should it have been deluted for safety reasons?

Re: Corn Whiskey Cut

Well, I dillute some down to about 50% and it's not bad if I do say so myself. I've always been under the assumption that the cut should be between 60% and 80% so I was wondering if maybe I should adjust my temp to take it faster and lower the ABV.

Corn Whiskey Cut

I'm a sugar wash / reflux man myself but I wanted to try my hand at some whiskey. For the past year I've been doing 5 gallon corn washes, then a stripping run and setting it aside. Today I decided to do the final run with 8 gallons of first run. So far, I have 2 gallons at 85% with a still head temp...

Re: Refermenting a sugar wash

The yeast was a Turbo48 and it said to use 7KG of sugar and 6 gallons of water so 15 lbs was just right. I think I'll try it and distill along with a clean batch just to see what happens. I thought maybe someone had tried it and might have some first hand experience. Heck, if 'moonshiners' can disti...

Refermenting a sugar wash

I just did a run from a sugar wash and it was obvious that the wash didn't completely ferment. I used about 6 gallons of water, 15 lbs of sugar with a turbo yeast. What was different this time was that I left the bucket in a room that never got over 60F and the run produced less than 1/4 gallon of s...

Re: Re-using Yeast After SHTF

Thanks everyone. I have a thin mash, a sour mash and some sugar with turbo yeast fermenting now. I think I'll just let them go for awhile (new batches of course) and see what happens.

Re: Re-using Yeast After SHTF

I not overly concerned about zombies but I live in Alaska and laboratory grade freezers aren't that common and when I say 'SHTF', I'm assuming that there is no power or other creature comfort for a long period of time.

Re-using Yeast After SHTF

Hypothetical question. Suppose something happens and Sh*t Hits the Fan and the world ends as we know it. Besides toilet paper, booze is going to be the next thing sought after and we who brew will do just fine when it comes to bartering. Water and grain shouldn't be a problem but yeast is another ma...

Re: Rice whisky

Shochu is distilled rice wine. Get some koji spours and follow the directions. Very simple process and an excellent sipping brew, especially if you already like sake.

Re: Gout

Excellent info everyone, thank you! For those of you who have never suffered a gout attack, you can thank your lucky stars as they are too painful to describe. I didn't think that there would be a corrolation with home made alcohol but it never hurts to ask. Thanks again:)

Re: Gout

I've had gout for about 8 years now and take medication to 'control' the uric acid but I still get flare ups every couple of months. And when I was referring to 'home brew' I was actually referring to any type of home made alcohol ie beer, wine or spirits. I've done some research and there isn't any...

Gout

I don't know if there is a relationship or not but has anyone else developed gout since they began home brewing? There is a definite link between alcohol and gout but I was wondering if homebrew could be worse. Thanks!

Good to be back

After a year or so taking care of family issues, it's great to be back to the forum. Looks like there are a lot of new faces and I'm looking forward to getting acquainted (as well as brewing something other than sugar washes). Vodka's good but brandy is definitely better  My only problem is kee...

Low Alcohol Content

Problems, problems and more problems :? Due to the cost of grapes here in AK, I make my red wine from kits. Never had a bad batch yet, until now. Just checked the SG and it was .990 so all of the sugars have fermented out. Checked the alcohol content and it is a whopping 5%. So my questions............

95 Gallons :D I'm envious. I started this hobby for the sole purpose of making brandy. Hate to say it but I've gotten to liking the vodka just as much  Double distill your wine and then add some carmelized sugar for body and color. I then put a strip of charred oak about 1/2x1/2x4" in each...

Jaxom: Sorry you're confused there guy so let's break this down to some simple components. You had a 'clean' still. You used oxyclean which discolored the clean still. You say it even feels 'greasy'. Options: Leave it as-is and put a run through it. It will either be OK or it won't. Clean the still ...

Protecting Copper When Not in Use

Last winter I put away more booze than I ever thought I'd drink and thought I would take the summer off with my distilling. Guess I was thirstier than I thought as I started running out of vodka. Those screwdrivers were pretty good :D Anyway, I made 10 gallons of sugar wash and broke out the still. ...

Get yourself an electric drill and a 2-3" wire wheel. It will take absolutely anything out that might be imbedded in the pressure cooker. No solvent or cleaner can touch this method.

Well said Fourway. I too quit smoking pot about 18 years ago after smoking the stuff for about 17 years. Never arrested or even hassled during that time. Reason? Didn't flaunt it or try to draw attention to myself. Same as I do with distilling now. The 'war on drugs' is and always has been a lost ca...

Ever heard of such a thing?

I have to agree with the Chemist. Sounds like you threw out the drinkable part and drank the tails. And a glass full at that. I'm surprised all you got was a headache.
