the grain has no starch left, but it does have taste, and that might be a reason to re-use it. not for the alcohol-matter That is what I was getting at. I would hate to throw away 9 pounds of grain. So, if I were to keep the grain but throw in an additional pound of malted barley for subsequent was...

Re-using grains
If I have a corn/malted barley/wheat grain bill, how many times can I reuse the same grains? Should I just replace the malt? Should I re-cook the whole thing every time? I am trying to get about three gallons of drinkable stuff, so I am estimating I will need three 5-gallon mashes. I am trying to av...

Thermostats on Still
I have wanted to experiment with an electronical thermometer with a shut off so that I can set it to maintain the temperature in the still at just 172 deg. Doesn't it make sense that this will extract more of the "good stuff" than just letting it rip? I have a Still Spirits reflux/pot stil...

What do you do with the stuff that comes out below 172 degrees? That is, except forthe methanol, or is it all bad in your estimation? For my last batch which came ut pretty good after ageing a bit on oak, I distilled everything twice and then on the third run used my nose to know when to cut it off....

"Middle Cuts"
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I was wondering what I would get if I were to make 4 successive sour mashes and distill them seperately taking the best 15% or so in the middle. Then, distill that 2 liters two more times. I imagine that should make a pretty good brew and enough to make 4...

Just Bottled
I just bottled my first serious mash after distilling and aging about 6 months in a stick o' french oak. It's got a purty nice caramel color to it and tastes good enough to serve to company. I am not a whiskey drinker, but I think I am going to continue along this line until I perfect the product - ...

Turbo Yeast for Wine?
I am trying a little experiment with a gallon jug of apple juice using turbo yeast and letting it ferment for 48 hours. Watcha think I'll get? Will the Turbo yeast nutrients be overload and affect the taste? I figger I can always strip out the ethanol if it's just aweful. Will let y'all know.

As a rile of thumb, never EWVER let anyone you don't know into your home unless they have a warrant. It amazes me how many people will let a complete stranger search their home just because they have a badge and a gun.

Re: Cornelius Keg questions
Howdy Ginzo. I noticed you said it was gonna be for mixin' rootbeer and fillin' bottles. It would be much easier amd way cheaper to just mix up yer soda in a huge pot and use a syphon and a rackin' cane to fill yer bottles and let it naturally carbonate. Thanks for the infor. I am trying to bottle ...

Cornelius Keg questions
Can someone help me here? I am looking to buy a Cornelius keg system just to mix and dispense root beer into bottles. I am rather ignorant on the subject, though. Does the keg need to be refrigerated in order to carbonate with the co2 tank? I know that cold water carbonates better in a selzter bottl...

Not sure what you are making or what came before. But for a second distillation, lots of folks cut that first part. Either fore shots or heads for recycling. I used two washes together that came out to a gallon and a half - one half was a sugar/brown sugar wash and the other half was a strawberry w...

My first "Second run"
I just ran a sexond run for the first time and got back a gallon from a gallon and a half of "first run". Is that normal? Am I supposed to get more flavor the more runs I do? Doesn't seem like it. Seems like I jest got more alky, which is fine by me. I took a strong whiff of the first 200 ...

Re: additives
Hi again Ginzo, Tins with strawberry puree have preservatives in them that prevent them from going off. But these same preservatives prevent fermentation from taking place, so get the fresh un-eradiated strawberries from the store (if you see a few mouldy ones the chances are you are un-eradiated a...

Most literature I've read indicates that the spirit and contact carbon mixture is able to breath , is that necessary?? I keep the spirit in an open glass demijohn with fine cloth over the top. Am I wasting my time? Sounds like that's a good way to evaporate spirits. I sit the distillate in a glass ...

What makes you the judge of what AK Coyote and Geoff know or don't know? [/quote] I am basing what they know - or don't know - on their posts here. I thought Geof was talking about standing up to evil and so was I. I don't believe that surviving a battlefield gives one the right to be correct about everything regardless of what they actually know about. He made an ignorant statement and I called him on his ignotance. That's all. Stop making thi...
