Re: First All Grain...

Thanks for the suggestions. I took a gravity reading and got a little over 1.060. I'm not sure how well that will work as the grain is still in the fermenter but It'll surely be close. I pitched half a cup of yeast on 25 gallons or so and in a few days I'll run it off and then refill with sugar wate...

First All Grain...

Haven't been around much. Life gets in the way you know. I finally decided to break out the still again and just did my first all grain mash, waiting for it to cool down right now so I can pitch my yeast. 50 lb. Cracked Corn 15 lb. 2 row malted barley I boiled the corn in 2 10 gal. batches (I'm usin...

corn prices.

What are y'all paying for corn. I just picked up a 50lb bag or cracked corn for $15 or about .30/lb

Is this about right or am I paying a premium for living in a densely populated area?

FWIW: I live in the SF Bay Area

Unfortunately you wasted a packet of 1118. The sediment is loaded with yeast, you don't need to pitch on top of it. You might want to boil then freeze some of the left over sediment to kill the yeast leaving you with yeast hulls which make for a great nutrient for next time you want to make somethin...

quick spreadsheet

here is a quick spreadsheet to calculate your gravity for mashes. Just punch in the amount of each grain/sugar and it will automatically calculate your Original gravity and (using a target gravity you can provide) your ABV of the fermented mash. You can also punch in your OG and FG and it will calcu...

after i cook the wheat germ do i strain it out or do i just toss it all in the fermenter? Sorry, I haven't been in this thread in a while. You MUST put the wheat germ in the fermenter for best results. For one thing the nutrients are likely not ALL extracted in the boiling process, another reason i...

My first still was/is an Essential Extractor from BrewHaus. I would rather have built slant plate in-line head like bokakob or the like. The 2 cross flow condensers up top aren't terribly efficient and the liebig should really be a bit longer unless you are running a lot of very cool water. Don't ge...

Re: How to corn mash?

I guess I'm wondering if I should even use the water cooler for my mash. Sounds like you want to simmer the corn for 30 minutes and then add to mash tun with grain and then mash like normal (also adding enzymes I would guess at this time). That is exactly what you want to do. Also, doing the iodine...

I think that you do, in fact, want a valve before the condenser. This way you won't be wasting your cooling water condensing vapors that should be refluxing as vapor. If you're getting overflow from the condenser you'll actually be a LM column, which isn't bad particularly but be sure to put a beak ...
