Re: So, do I really need a flute?
If you had read my earlier post properly you would realise that I had begun planning a flute, but further reading proved that it was not optimal for my purposes, so please do not feel as though you have revealed some dark secret of mine by linking that thread. 'Show us something other than talk. Bri...

Re: So, do I really need a flute?
What you guys have said just reinforces my point - when I said that the flavour is in the satisfaction, I didn't mean just that. Subjective flavour can be reviewed by survey of multiple tasters - and we have done exactly that on this forum, except not formally: flute users are often ready to defend ...

Re: So, do I really need a flute?
As much as we'd like to discuss our feelings on the matter there's no use in it unless either opinion can provide evidence of their point of view. What I will say, though, is that you yourself OD are of the opinion that perforated plates produce the same product, or at least a product with very litt...

just want to give my opinion
Admin edit split this off another post as it took it off topic To be quite frank, I think that while the flute design is a very good piece of craftsmanship, one might argue that not quite as much engineering as gone into it per amount of effort. Please don't take this as offense, flute builders. Th...

Re: Will my condensor be enough?
Sorry praerie, the water will flow through the thirteen 1/2" tubes and it will be mounted horizontally, much like a crossflow. The tubes are spaced loosely enough so that I should be able to fit some packing in there to slow things down a bit, with that I reckon it will be enough. Thanks for he...

Will my condensor be enough?
So I am set on constructing my own 4" vm - partly from parts of discontinued projects. One of those parts is an un shelled shotgun condensor i plan to use as a crossflow reflux condensor, but before I build I'd like to hear some of your opinions on whether it would be enough to provide full ref...

Re: Brazing/Hard Soldering Questions
So, given that - could you reccomend to me which solders to use for: the stainless ferrules to copper which do not need to be high-temp; and the copper-copper brazes which should be high temp. I have researched the solders but a couple of things are still fuzzy, so confirmation from the experienced ...

Re: Brazing/Hard Soldering Questions
Hmm, alright - btw the reason I planned on using silver for some of the copper-copper work was to have a two-stage solder, for example I would silver solder the small tubes in my shotgun, then soft solder the outside. It really is out of the question to get oxy, but the only reason I'll use the silv...

Re: Brazing/Hard Soldering Questions
The bricks and whatnot is for the hearth, basically just to reflect the heat back at the work. I only have access to mapp, nothing oxy - will 15% work find as a first rounder without flux even if I only use mapp? Btw can't get the exact brands you guys have but we still have a large selection, could...

Brazing/Hard Soldering Questions
So I've done pretty much all the dry work on my plated still, but now I need to start the soldering. First of all the hearth, I plan on using one to improve the general brazing process, I have read about different density fire bricks, vermiculite and coke, but haven't been able to settle on what exa...

Re: New Take on a Great Design... ODs Magic Flute - Mark 2.
Damn OD, looking sweet! Must have been a PITA soldering all those plates AND weirs in without de-soldering anything/using too much solder - did you just tin the edges then heat from outside, or is this an OD trade secret ?

Sorry ks I already placed my order with them! I had to go with the cheapest option, sure you can understand, on a tight budget So I tried my luck. If they don't deliver, then I'll cancel, and get them from you before I go back. Still send the original order I placed with you asap please

Oh, I was aware of that link what I meant was: is it still ok to buy from them? As in, it won't take 2 weeks for delivery?
Edit: KLG doesn't supply gaskets - is there some sort of standard? I.e could I buy them from somewhere else and they would fit?

Apologies for off-topics: Has anyone bought from KLG's site recently? The site looks like its being updated, I'm having the same problem as spooky but can order one at a time if necessary. I was just wondering if they're still operating, I'm in America until the 26th (April) and, if i order today or...

Ah, another one who can share in the sadness of huge shipping rates from America! Welcome waylyn - I think what you mean by stainless barrel is a keg, pretty much all kegs are stainless - try your local recyclers, pubs and whatnot, and if you don't have any luck then go to http://www.morrow-brothers...

Re: lm or vm that is the question?
Well, everybody else has managed to do it  In any case, the keg will be a one off. MileHi's cheapest still is $109 for a 20" x 2" column . For $150 you could have 60" of 3" which could handle about 6 times as much power (thats an over-simplification, but its near enough). Y...

Re: Removing excess zinc from distillate (with electrolysis?
I'm pretty sure electroylsis wouldn't work :econfused: I don't know the charges of the molecules in the wash, but I'm quite certain that you'd end up not only failing to remove the zinc, but also with broken up bits of ethanol (you know what I mean, right?). Oh, and I couldn't help pointing out: log...

Re: lm or vm that is the question?
Hey PJ, first off welcome :D Second - I would strongly advise making your own still, buying one can cost alot of money, but more importantly you won't gain the understanding you would have if you'd bought the materials and made it yourself. From my experience with LM/VM, what is best is actually a c...

Re: Sanke Keg and Mile High Tower
Pretty much all the folks here use a keg boiler - there's no need for a loading port or drain valve as long as your still head/column is tri-clamped (search 'easy flange' for how to do this) - just take the head off then pour out your dunder, and wash with a hose. As for the still - is it your first...

Re: help please never made mash before
If you're using the grain for flavour as opposed to economy, then UJSSM is where most people start, and still are - uses sugar for fermentability (is that a word?) but the corn provides flavour that carries over nicely into the distillate.

Great way to get into the hobby - James May makes brilliant TV  First off - NEVER EVER put more than 80 to 90 proof in your still (chem set or otherwise), that's just a general rule - at 200 proof it will boil so quick that not only will nothing happen, you have a large chance of creating a fl...

Just had a thought concerning the flooding of plates when using tubular downcomers as opposed to weir downcomers: Using a handy internet calculator, by inputting the radius (2") and segment height (12mm as specified by OD and Sam), I found the area of the weir to be 0.83458 sq in. Converting to...

Functi-Flute - Design
So I have been trying to resist making myself one of the beauties that are flutes, but with a trip to US coming up and an opportunity for some cheap(er) copper, I gave in. The plan is to use KS' 20" body, the drop-in dephleg, and 4 perf plates. The reason the thread is named 'Functi-Flute' is t...
