Exactly.
Larger clearance between hydrometer and cylinder wall = more stability

Re: My first parrot

The 1/4" will be fine for your pot still. What causes the problem with parrots is the speed at which the liquid passes the hydrometer. Less clearance between hydro and tubing wall = more instability Larger clearance between hydro and tubing wall = more constant reading Going against all other a...

Re: First Post ... first question

DD, I agree with the previous posters. You need to have a heat source which does not cycle. Controllers are available to suit the purpose. Ignore the thermometer for setting your running speed, set the temperature to give you a slow drip, fast drip or small stream and taste the product to see what w...

Re: temperature for potstill

Just for the record I will say this loud and clear. I use a thermometer on my pot still. There, I said it and I feel much better now. I do not use it to tell me how fast to run my still, I use it as a guide to let me know when to expect the change from hearts to tails etc. as I find it easier to use...

Re: Coolant flow rate for VM?

Why do you not try it with the set-up you have before you worry about changing it. You will be surprised how little flow rate you need to knock down your vapour. Many people imagine you have to have a stream exiting your worm like you have not pissed in the last 2 weeks. Not the case. Give it a try....

Re: Improve the Smiley design?

Input heat is matched to column diameter, therefore the suggestion is that for 1800w of power, a 2" column would be a better match rather than 1 1/2".
Column height is matched to purity therefore it does not follow that if you change the diameter you must change the height.

Re: Boiling over problem

Decant the wash from one container to another, pouring from a height to cause the wash to foam up, releasing the stored up gas within the liquid. This can be the cause of many a boil-over (puke). I good vigerous stirring can sometimes have the same result. Do this before putting into the still. Chee...

Well I like a little bit of charred flavor, but just not so much to where it overcomes the other flavors. Just a hint of it. Also, as for the spirit itself, I dont want it to be too "thick" or heavy, if you know what I mean. I want it sort of mellowed out, just a little bit more flavor th...

Re: perforated plates

Yes.
But then what would be the percieved benefit of using mesh.
It seems to me that if you have liquid sitting on top of it, how does the vapour travel up, or does that also travel up the overflow pipe?
Somehow I seem to be missing the whole point of using mesh instead of a plate.

Just a simple question.

How does the vapour move up through the mesh at the same time as the liquid is trying to move down?
With a bubble plate there is an overflow mechanism built in. What happens in this version?

By NO LEAKS, we mean in all of the joints of the boiler, column, condenser etc. must be leak proof for safety reasons.
The still itself must not be sealed off from the atmosphere though.

Re: Bokakob still question

To get the full benefit from a pot head, it's best to remove all restrictions possible, this would mean plates, packing etc.
I found it easier to make a completely different head and just swap it over where your column attaches to your boiler.

A Bok will run hotter if you increase the take-off rate but why are you worrying.
If you push a piece of scrubber into the coil it will help reduce the steam escape.

Re: Still design opinions

MM, what you nead to get your mind around is how the distillation process affects the final taste. Basic explanation follows. 95% abv alcohol consists of 95% pure alcohol (no taste) + 5% water (the wash taste). This is typical of what you get from a good reflux still. No taste (or very little) and n...

Re: ideas for flexibility of output line

I made a small liebig for the output on my Bok Mini. It is less than 6" long of 1/4" inside of 1/2" copper and cools everything down plenty.
Same as eternal frost, the cooling water passes first through the Liebig then on to the condenser.
