Re: Electric Boilers & Heat Control

I run a full size chemical distillation process for a living. Stripping column is 75 ft tall, reflux column is 85 ft tall with a 40 ft condenser. All instrumentation is PID controlled and no input or output are rock steady. My final product is 99.5%. Temperature and pressure are everything. I can lo...

Re: Electric Boilers & Heat Control

I built a PID controller for my still. You can set the temperature where ever you want it and it will normally stay within about 2 degrees of your set point. I normally start out with a temperature of 185 degrees and run off 100 ml, then raise my temperature in increment of 2 degrees until I get to ...

Re: Fermentation help?

I finally got some pH paper and tested my buckets this morning. The pH is in the 5 range and bubbling like mad. The oyster shell made a world of difference. I will throw some oyster shells in every batch from now on.

Re: Fermentation help?

I have had a couple of 5 gallon ferments stall. The first batch I threw out after several attempts to bring it back. It finally came to mind to check th pH, turns out the pH was about a 2.8 and very slow to bubble, 1 bubble very 2 minutes. I went to the feed store and got some oyster shells and put ...

Hello again

It's been a while since I last posted.
The wife decided she didn't like me anymore we parted company. In doing so, she gave away a lot of my toys. It's been a couple of years and I'm rebuilding and ready to enjoy my favorite hobby once again.

Re: search bar

a faint flavor of what? (granted sugar wash doesn't leave many options  ) You do need to do good cuts -- Retains that slight hint of grain on the after taste. That is what I'm trying to get rid of. I make deeper cuts than most. The first quart is lighter fluid then I stop at about 42%.

Re: distilling wine

Wines make for an interesting drink. One thing about it, if you don't like it you can blend it with something else and re-distill it.

Re: search bar

I am looking at making a good vodka and using an activated charcoal filtering system to purify it.
There are 918 post on charcoal filtering, but I haven't seen one witha filter design yet. Maybe I will just build one and post it.

Thanks RD, but I had run across that post. There is just so much not right with that design, not to mention the fact that it is eight feet tall.

Re: distilling wine

I like to distill grape wine then set it on oak for a while. It makes a pretty good brandy. I make the same cuts as I do for UJSM. Not sure about the back set.

search bar

I seem to be having trouble with the search bar. No matter what I type in there it comes back as a bad search. Such as filter, carbon, and vodka. Or, is it just me?
