Re: condenser with more surface area

I just wanted to add my experience with this condensor design. I made a couple of minor alterations to the design. I used .5" for the interior water line and 1.25" for the exterior water jacket. The vapor path was made with 1" copper. The reason that I did this is that: 1) I calculate...

Re: wiring of a reflux still

Just wanted to share this with everyone: I did a pigtail for my still and it worked great. I have a 220v 4500 watt heater element. I wired it to a standard 110v plug. For several runs that was all I did, but it took several hours to heat up 12 gallons of wash. I wanted to speed it up a bit. I made a...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

OK.... ran my first strip run of rum and had a couple of observations / questions 1) The fermenting wash smelled aweful !!! The wife ran it... and me out of the house... Is that normal ? 2) The stripped wash came over with a light tint to it. Sort of a yellowish / tan... Is that normal ? 3) Noticed ...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

Now for the tricky part. On the spirit run: Run it easy, not to fast, not to slow. Make the heads to hearts cut like normal and add heads to the vodka/neutral container, do NOT reuse these in your rum. Run out hearts till you start to get the wet cardboard taste. On my still this is between 85% ABV...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

If you haven't tried Pugi's "Yeast Bomb" you don't know what you are missing.

That was the most vigorous ferment I have ever seen. 39 lbs of fermentables went from 1.080 to 1.007 in 36 hours.

Incredible.....

I also started this recipe for the first time over the holiday weekend. Original SG was 1.076. 8lbs sugar / 12 oz can tomato paste / lemon juice / epsom salts / 5 gal water. Did not get any krausen at all but still a good fermentation going. Drops about .010 per day. My question is also about the cl...

Thanks Coops.

I don't actually have the still up and running yet. I was just doing a time trial of water flow through my condensor.

I have a 1500 watt rheostat to control the power and will "dial the input down".

Cooling water question

I'm about to get my still together and have a simple question about cooling water flow. Has anyone measured the output quantity of their cooling water? I am getting about 400 ml per minute and I don't think that is anywhere near enough. My still: 15 gal ss keg 1125 watt heater 2" copper column ...

Thank you Shadylane. From your comment I take it that it will work.

I will go buy the supplies and give it a try.

I also scored a 1500w rheostat on ebay for $12 !!!! Yee-ha !!!!!

Thanks - Ozark Shiner

Electrical Question ???

Had an idea and thought I would run it past all the guys with better electrical backgrounds than myself. I would like to have one 4500w 240v heater element and be able to run it at dual voltages. 240v for getting the boiler up to temp and then 120v for the cuts. I have seen several suggestions (DPDT...

Kilo - Thank you a million !!! I think that is great news that there is a good source for NPT treaded heater elements. Oh and just for the record - you can NOT easily rethread the NPS heater element to NPT. The reason is that there are only about four full threads on the heater element. It takes two...

So has anyone ever tried rethreading a NPS water heater element to NPT or am I about to be the first ??? It is a cheap experiment so I will share my results with everyone. I really appreciate the suggestion about the DPDT switch. I drew up a plan to do this and to incorporate the home-made rehostat ...

WOW - 7 replies in less than a day !!! Thanks. I looked at plumbing supply and almost ordered from them. I even called them. I just can not believe that they are actually NPT thread. NO ONE ELSE ANYWHERE has NPT thread. Most people think I am a lunatic for even asking. Please let us know when you ge...

Hopefully not a dumb question

I've been reading everything I can on here for over a month and am getting ready to build my still. Two questions that I have not seen anywhere on here: 1) Has anyone tried re-threading a hot water heater element from NPS thread to NPT thread? I would think that would work, but not sure. 2) OK... he...
