Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

i use 20-25% and find it is quite strong enough in flavour. Another trick to boosting flavour is to try different amounts of wash in with stripped low wines for a spirit run. You can add anything from 10% wash to 70% wash to control flavour and final proof of distillate. Try 50-50 wash and low wines...

Yes, your numbers add up.

With practice and bleeding heads slower, you'll get that portion lower.

adding bicarb (and water) before the run may help.

Re: Great Apple brandy: Toasted or charred barrel?

You should not fill a barrell below about two thirds full according to my cooper (even then it should eb regularly turned). Full is very much preferable. The barrell will dry out and warp otherwise. They always ask exactly when i am going to pick the barrell up, to make sure that it is finnished onl...

Re: Worm condenser

Old timers like atleast 7 turns on their worm. I found when your done and ready to run, take a ball bearing small enough for your worm and let it go in it. Itshould run freely thru. That way you know there isn't any restrictions or coil raised too high in the coil. Nice to see ya back posting again ...

Re: Octuple parrallel compound coil

How long is a 900 gallon run gunna take you? Looks like about 40 or 50mm coming in at the lyne arm? I would have chosen a double shell condensor myself, much more ease of construction and large flowthrough, huge surface area too. As in my punkindensor and there's some others on the board too. But no...

Re: Rye whiskey, 5 gallon barrel worth it?

Dunno what size that is, but i find 50l (13 gallon) to be a very good, achievable size for sugar based spirits like rum or ujsm. It'd take a while to fill one with allgrain, but very achievable at home with a keg still if using sugar. A smaller one is not much cheaper, and while a larger one is not ...

Re: Rye whiskey, 5 gallon barrel worth it?

The second one is called the solara method, and is mostly what i use. If one were to draw off of a barrel every 3 to 4 weeks, would you say that the flavor profile changes a bit before retopping? That's a little more complicated than i tend to make things. It is what it is, the recipe is the same, ...

Re: Rye whiskey, 5 gallon barrel worth it?

There's two choices you have; to fill your barrell, wait till you think it's ready to drink, empty it and fill it back up again, or to fill your barrell, wait till it either ready to drink or has some coulor flavour and continually take a portion out and top it back up again. The second one is calle...

Re: fermenting in an apartment

run a simple hose or preferably NPT fitting past the trap in a sink and simply hook a hose to whatever needs to be vented to the atmosphere. Tie that into your fermenter somehow (preferably making it a one way avenue connection) and presto-cadabara no more smell... it all goes to the roof. What you...
