Re: Deathwish Wheat germ recipe

Great recipe! Ran my first batch yesterday and I have to say that I'm amazed. Very nice taste, even unaged. Indeed a bit like a light scotch or irish whisky. I will be putting half of it on oak chips as well to see what that does to it.

Re: Deathwish Wheat germ recipe

Started my first batch yesterday but it still aint bubbling. I used one 5 g pack of ec-1118, rehadrated properly and then pitched it in the 25 deg C wash. Now, 18 hours later, it still pretty much doesn't do anything. I know some say the 1118 tends to lag a bit, but I'd say that this is a bit to muc...

Re: Everything you need to know about oak alternatives.

Is it normal that some kind of oily substance comes out of the oak when you toast it? Just toasted some quercus robur oak sticks that I split from firewood that has been drying outside for probably 2-3 years. I used only heartwood and toasted it in the oven for 3 hours @ 200 deg C. Smelled really ni...

Re: What kind of Mold?

Remember myself noticing a slightly funny smell after I left a batch of UJSM dormant for about three days and the wash had just a few large air bubbles floating on top of it, but no spider web. When I added new sugar/backset it went off as usual and it finished in 4-5 days so I guess it's allright. ...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

Measured the SG a minute ago and it's still around 1060 although I added the yeast 72 hours ago. Seems to be going very slowly, should I perhaps add more yeast? Started with 3.5 kg (~8 pounds) of sugar and an equal amount of corn for a total volume of 6 gallons and used 1 package (5 g) EC-1118. I th...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

Just started my first 5 gallon batch of Uncle J's sour mash.

Do you guys ever wash or boil the corn before adding it in order to sterilize it? Didn't do it myself, but the question came up while mixing everything together cause it looked kind of messy ;)

I especially like the condenser, what's the diameter of the centre coil and how did you bend it? Is it 1/4" O.D. tubing?

I use mine as a boiler, but if I had more kegs I would use them as fermenter.

Guess you could also make a nice vodka dispenser out of one ;)

I use teflon tri clamp gaskets, they are also used in milking equipment etc. Got them from ebay.

@Dnderhead: the tri clover gaskets from Brehaus are most likely made of EPDM.

A quick glance at a chemical resistance database will tell you that nitrile rubber (also called Buna N) isn't recommended for contact with ethanol.
Teflon would be my choice.

When the water hasn't quite reached it's boiling point, there is little vapor formed and the head temperature remains low. If it really starts to boil, temperature rises quickly so I guess it's normal. Compare it with a whistling kettle if you like.

How big is your boiler?

I recently purchased a propane/butane burner with flame-out protection that is also suited to use inside.

That looks nice. Personally, I just use some insulation foil to keep my fermentor at temperature. When doing my last sugar wash, I wrapped the fermentation vessel with a single layer of insulation foil and that kept temperature at 25-30 deg C during the first few days in 16-18 deg C ambient air. Tem...

If I'm correct a nixon stone still is an offset head still (or at least equal in construction/operation principle)? If so, you should use a valve to control the reflux ratio and thus the temperature in the head of the column rather than the coolant flow ratio. The condenser should just knock down al...

They have this one at Brouwland, a Belgian homebrewing shop. It's sold as a beer wort aerator. http://www.morebeer.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow sells similar wort aeration systems.

I'm thinking of getting an aeration pump with a 0.2 micron filter and ceramic air stone to use while growing yeast:

Will that enhance the growth process?

Tygon tubing has quite good chemical resistance and I believe it's used in chemistry labs etc. Personally I wouln't use it though.

The only plastic that I use confidently for gaskets is Teflon (PTFE) as it's virtually chemically inert. It also has high temperature resistance.

Where do you buy your cracked corn?

Reading through some other threads, it seems to me that most people buy their cracked corn at some kind of animal feed supply store. I bought a 25 kg bag (chicken feed) here, and according to the manufacturer it is 100% pure and natural, but is this stuff really safe to use? I guess it is, but I don...
