Re: Turbo Yeast and Bentonite

if it was done fermenting you knocked off the c02 clinging to particles, next time stir/shake, it will "clear" faster Now that might be it... after stirring in a mixture of boiling water and bentonite.. I also sprinkled some bentonite powder on to the wash.. and it reacted by fizzing vigo...

Re: Turbo Yeast and Bentonite

It definitely wasn't the stirring, not only did I give it a vigorous stirring while still in the 50 litre container, after pouring into 2 25 liter containers it was restired. In case it was just because of the agitation of the liquid, I left it alone in the new containers with airlocks, and saw no b...

Turbo Yeast and Bentonite

OK, I have noticed this 3 times now, and was wondering if anyone knew what was happening. I regularly make straight sugar washes using a 50 litre container, and out of convenience the last 3 times I have drained the result into 2 25 litre containers in order to add Bentonite in order to clear the wa...

Re: 1 year in the making

Hmm, so I'd need a LOT of bottles/jugs to hold distillate till I had enough...

Long term plan however, after I build my own little distillery area of course, with some lifts, moving 60 litre fermenters gets tiring.

Re: 1 year in the making

How big a barrels do other people use?

If I had my own house (still a renter) I think I'd get a very large one and keep distilling till I could fill it. 10 Litres just wasn't enough.

Re: 1 year in the making

Hehehe, yes, it was hard waiting a year, and the worst part is, I've used all 10 litres up already (I had to give bottles to all my friends so they could enjoy it :-) ). 1 year to age, 1 week to appreciate. Still, distilling off first batch of a grain mash, very different smell to the UJSM (I guess ...

1 year in the making

Just opened my 10 litre barrel of UJSM at the start of the month, its been aged for exactly 1 year. I was exceedingly happy with the results, similar in taste to a bourbon (I put maple sticks in the barrel with it hoping for that extra sweet tang). Was well worth the wait. Now, to try a full grain m...

Re: Spent Yeast experiment

A FOAF (OK, it was me!) once attempted to ferment Coca Cola @ pH 2.0 for reasons which are now obscure. No go there. I did that once, as an experiment. Some friends drink a lot of Coke and were really fussy about it being flat, so I asked them to keep all the half bottles they usually wash ...

If you want a strong brandy coloring, you need to age on wood. I had really good results with an apple experiment by macerating with some apples at 80%, then after it developed an apple taste (1 week approx), cut to 65% and aged in a barrel that I'd used for UJSM several times. It developed the bran...

Good plan :-) I can't speak with any real authority, as I haven't aged anything for 12 months yet. But I have noticed considerable results from aging in barrels, but my longest has only been 2 months in a 5Litre barrel. I have 10 Litres in a barrel that I don't plan to touch till 12 months are up, b...

Too much sugar mate. For a 25 litre wash with a turbo, you're looking at around 6kg's of sugar.

If you do use a clearing agent, I recommend bentonite. I believe it was Pinto who told me how to use it best (use a blender with boiling hot water and add it while blending, then stir it into the wash). I used about 10 tablespoons last time. Bentonite has a flavour reducing effect, which is why its ...

That is great, My last batch I just collected into containers and took away some from the end and the start...

NEXT TIME I'm going to taste them ALL and see about these flavour transitions and see what kind of result I get.

Very informative post, thank you.

One day I intend to live in a rural setting again, having grown up on a large orchard/farm, I do miss it.

And I will definitely be growing corn at the very least :-)

Growing some indoor berry plants in my flat, but doubt I'll ever see them produce enough fruit to do much with :-)

for turbo yeast, yes, definitely let it clear, or aide the clearing process with a clearing agent, isinglass or bentonite, or one of the other alternatives. It may just be me, but I found it difficult to get a nice clean tasting product from a turbo wash without multiple distillations (I don't bothe...

My first 3 runs of UJSM where made using thawed frozen corn (blended up, not just whole). Given that a UJSM is basically a flavoured sugar wash (if you exclude the backset), then yes, you will get corn flavour in the result. If you're going to add corn to a sugar wash for flavour, then you may as we...

And that is nice looking work on the still, I'm envious. I like the way you can break it down.

Some flavourings are actually very nice. But I wouldn't rate any of the bourbon "flavourings" I've tried among them.

But still, I'd say go for it, and try it out, and learn :-)

Yeh, I'm the same.

It ferments... I notice its stopped, but I'm kinda busy with stuff, but make a mental note that if I get some free time in the upcoming weekend, its ready...

And by the time I take it off, its more than clear enough to distill.
