Re: Liquid Malt Extract Experiment

Maybe I'm a little blasé when it comes to pukes after playing around with molasses washes for so long.
On the occasions that I've mixed LME into UJSSM ferments I don't think it was to bad, just had to be a little careful.

Re: Liquid Malt Extract Experiment

I do potstill LME stripping runs at the max possible, usually decided by how much power before it foams up and starts puking. Next turn the heat down, wait awhile, then turn the heat back up to the below limit of drama. I gotta agree , its not really rocket science, get that thing heated up ,if it ...

Re: 1 litre alembic pot still huffing on vinegar run?

Don't put ice in it, just cool water, your shock cooling the vapour, that is partly the problem.
It will also run differently with alcohol in the boiler, no still ever performs the same with water and vinegar in the boiler.

Got the new $50 stainless steel still off of Amazon, I would expect a $50 still to produce anything much better. I’m not sure any amount of cleaning runs can clean the inside of corrugated stainless steel (CSS). By its very nature it will capture liquid in each of those corrugated rings. CSS would ...

I wouldn't run 40% low wines in a pot still for Rum I'd be inclined to run lower abv, something that will average out to barrel strength of around 62-65 %
A starting point would be 28% -32%. From memory, it's been a while since I did a pot run.

I'm still trying to find a useful source of American oak here in France so that I can compare I've found these to work very well when pre oaking/ aging in stainless or glass. Pretty sure the European distributor would have them. https://stilldragon.com.au/products/american-oak-dominoes-1kg-medium-t...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I've tried char, didn't like it due to giving the Rum a smokey flavour, or at least that's what happened when I tried it. Having said that using charred sticks or barrel that have seen a bit of previous use might change that. Some of the better Rum I've made was stored in a small X port barrel. I've...

I'm not sure how you've managed to get a stronger tasting Rum from treacle than from blackstrap.
Treacle is more refined and less strong in flavour from my experience.

I've considered SPP, bubble plates and sieve plates. Or just perforated plates, but I don't fancy drilling that many holes If your after neutral, plates, caps or perforated are not the way to go, stick with packing SPP , rocks or marbles, personally I prefer copper mesh. Cutting the low wines to 28- 30 % ABV will make for a better end result.
The extra water in the boiler gives the tails somewhere to hide, acts as a filter so to speak.

That was what I was thinking to Normandi, canned beer kits already contain the hops, where as cans of LME don't have hops in them.

I've seen kegs going for about $50 if I want to make a boiler, but not sure what to watch out for in the way of getting one with the right fitting for a tri clamp. A two inch flange clamps straight to most beer kegs , a few wraps of PTF thread tape around the whole thing and you don't need more. Al...
