Re: Pure Sugar Can Juice Rum : I need your help !
The spirit made from pure sugar cane juice is called Cachaça, it can also go by the names of Pinga, Caninha , and a couple of other names which escape me at this moment. I've never tried to make a batch from straight cane juice even though I live in sugarcane country here in Au, it is on my bucket l...

Re: A big hello from an enthusiastic total noob
Welcome StrayAlien, I'll leave both posts because they both tell us a little about you and what you wish to achieve in this hobby. To make good Gin you need both a reflux still and a pot still. You can easily build a pot still head to fit the lid of that boiler, I did it when I first started in this...

When I first started out distilling that is all anyone used , it works just as well as citric or any other acid and if used hot n fresh is even faster imo.

Normandi, you got me interested with that post , Let me start by saying that I grow both Sage and what we call Oregano. Looking at images on the www it seems to me that the Sage that I grow has an elongated leave and is a greyish blue colour, its quite a large leaf...the images the same as what I gr...

Re: Ageing my whisky
There is no pressure in a barrel of whisky. Sure there is. Well sometimes I turn the tap on to get a drink from a barrel and all it does is suck and gulp air, no booze in my jug. Other times you better stand back and watch out , that shit will come out like its leaving a fire hose, you can end up w...

Re: Sudden fermentation stop (not a leak)
As for the stop and start of bubbles, you almost have to have a small, intermittent leak. Yeast does not stop and start fermentation unless temperature is swinging and it is not swinging that much in an hours time. 100% agree , there is a leak....the only sure fire way to tell if it's stopped ferme...

Or you could possibly use Yellow Lable Yeast......just need to get the water, yeast ,grain, molasses ratios right......shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

I don't know were I first got Birdwatchers TPW recipe from, it could have been one of the Aussie forums. I made a lot of these when I first started out in the hobby. What I do know is that no one that I know does all that stirring and shaking stuff.....Ive never found it usefull either. I've always ...

Having said that, it's close enough for what you're going to use it for. Exactly , a point or two out ABV wise doesn't matter in hobby distilling, we don't need to keep Gubberments or anybody else happy like the Pros do. The kind that always turn their back on you so it's difficult to read the scal...

I can see now from SBB comments on 3.25 LPH at 3 inch vs my 750ml - 1.25 LPH at 1.5 inch ....I just didn't know I dont think it was me that said that , most people i know will run a 4 pate 4 inch column at between 2 and 3L an hour, the still will be producing at about 92% abv at that rate. Personal...

Re: Advantages with larger cloumn size
Ive got a few questions,
Did you build or buy this still ?
Are the plates perforated or are they a bubble cap design ?
Is the deflegmator also 1.5 inch and how long ?
Is there any chance of a photo ?

Re: hip flask discolouring rum
I think stainless steel is better and safer than glass. For aged colored liquor, wood kegs charred or not have their place. Got that right Shady, I store a lot of my low wines in stainless barrels, I pre oak a lot of product in stainless containers before it hits the oak barrels. I also store finis...

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka
is it safe to assume you would half that time with 3 inch plates My feeling is that you would more than halve the time. I tend to not deal in time when it comes to still output, much more accurate to talk Liters per hour ....or the imperial / US equivalent. I'd rather not discuss the ins and outs o...

I also have 3 x 1.5 bubble plates. time=1714566289 user_id=95510] I also have a temp gauge at the top above my plates. [/quote] Tells you nothing useful really. Yeah something real strange going on there, the inside of that flask must be coated or lined with something.
Pure stainless doesn't do that to booze.

More plates would help, if what you kept for drinking had
" quite a bite" it suggests that maybe you need to make better / tighter cuts.

a check with the Hydrometer says it's a hair under 1.00...like 0.998 or so. Looks like I have more reading to do You could have learned the same thing by sticking your finger in the wash and sucking it. Re: Accuracy of hydrometer
I believe an Alcometer is a Proof and Tralle hydrometer. Words. Thanks all, i will test my p/t hydometer, I only asked this because i read a while back they where not too accurate at lower abv, obviously not to be used to test a wash/mash after ferment for abv. An alcoholmeter can only be accurate ...
