Check Your Thermometer !!!!

Sunday I did my 1st real run in my reflux still using the BW Sugar Wash. I tossed the first 200ml's and collected 10 jars of 200 mills each. Strangely sample #2 (#1 was the foreshots) was the best smelling and tasting out of the bunch. I was figuring that the middle of the run would have been the be...

Re: Filtering with a Buon Vino Mini Jet ???

I thought you were going to filter a cleared wash through the finest filter to polish before stilling. Now time is free but even the clearest wash I ever ran had some haze in it and I was wondering if micro filtering it would make a difference, for better or worse. Sorry for the confusion. There is...

Re: Filtering with a Buon Vino Mini Jet ???

I'm convinced that a filter would work, I just haven't found the right one yet. The coarse filter is a 6 micron filter, I think I will try something like this next. http://www.cfsco.net/fibagsvowvob2.htmll Should be able to suspend that over a open container and let gravity do the rest. Th...

Re: Filtering with a Buon Vino Mini Jet ???

Well the filtering didn't go so well. What my wash looked like before racking. (I had to finally link the pictures, as the img process on this site is horrible. Apparently there is a 800 X 500 size limit and after resizing to 640 X 480 it still says it was too big. Really a 800 X 500 size limit on e...

Re: First run with new rig need pointers.

On a side note.... I am not familiar with your still, but I bought a reflux still from brewhaus so I would assume they are similar but not identical. My still can be used as a pot still as well be removing all of the column packing (The copper mesh, SS mesh or rings) and removing the cooling system ...

Re: First run with new rig need pointers.

Yes I want a neutral now but I read the UJSSM doesnt really shine till the 4th iteration. So I wanted 3 batches of neutral then I wanted to try for some UJSSM the traditional way. Also doesn't UJ collect from 80% abv to 70 % abv? I am just curious why I had no real drop off of abv at 203 F. I mean ...

Re: Still Cleaning - Metallic Taste/Smell

Am i reading this right. You are talking about the taste of your first sacrificial alcohol run. That should have been thrown Out? I don't se any mention if a second alcoholrun? Other then maybe the one you are ready to run? Or did I miss something here? No you are absolutely correct. I haven't done...

Re: Still Cleaning - Metallic Taste/Smell

first thing you should read up on making cuts,it sounds like your not making any? If you mean collecting 200ml samples at a time, yes I did that with the wine wash. I collected and tossed out the first 200ml just to be safe, and collected 7 more jars of approx 150-200 ml each(I used mason jelly jar...

Re: Still Cleaning - Metallic Taste/Smell

Those three cleaning runs should have done the trick... What are you using for structured column packing, or are you cleaning without it installed...??? Have you determined whether the smell is coming from the boiler or the column...??? I am using copper mesh. I ran it empty the 1st time when I jus...

Still Cleaning - Metallic Taste/Smell

What is the recommended number of cleaning runs or amount before you get rid of the metallic taste/odor? I tried just boiling water and that didnt work, I then moved on to about 1.5 gallons of water/vinegar and then did a 12l wash of scrub wine that I was going to toss out. I have a BW sugar wash th...

Re: Filtering with a Buon Vino Mini Jet ???

Well I have quite a few extra pads so I really have nothing to lose. They cost about 3 bucks each for the coarse ones. Ive never used the medium or fine as the coarse does a fantastic job its self. I can always loosen up on the pad clamps if the flow gets too slow. I think ill rack to a secondary th...

Filtering with a Buon Vino Mini Jet ???

I am in the process of making a batch of Birdwatchers Sugar Wash and I was wondering if I could speed up the process. Has anyone ever tried filtering a sugar wash with a buon vino mini jet or anything similar? Link here if you dont know what I am talking about http://www.buonvino.com/P_MiniJet.shtml...

Skeeter Pee - AKA Lemonade wine

I dont really care for wine, I make it for my wife but this stuff is pretty damn good. Its cheap, relativity easy and surprisingly refreshing on a hot summer day. As a side bonus its ready to drink as soon as it clears. It possibly might improve with age, but it never stays around long enough to age...

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe

Started this wash yesterday and it started fermenting within 30 mins, maybe even less. I went for a 6 Gallon wash (25l) 10 lbs of sugar (4.3 kg) 1 small can of organic tomato paste (170g). I looked at the ingredients and only the organic had JUST tomatoes, the others had additives and preservatives....

Re: Using Wine as a Wash

Thanks for all the answers. It is a white wine and I was going to toss it anyway so I have nothing to lose. I was going to do it last night but it took me longer to get the still put together and going than I thought it would.

Using Wine as a Wash

Sorry if this has been asked, but I searched for Wine, wash and distilling wine and it wouldn't let me as those words are too common. I just ordered the Essential Extractor PSII High Capacity from BrewHaus and I want to make Vodka. I have the recipe from here http://www.home-distilling.com/store/pc/...

Need Advice on Still & Vodka

So, I have been reading up on distilling for about a month now and i THINK i know what I am looking for, but still have some questions. My assumptions  so far. 1. I want to primarily make Vodka/neutral spirit. This is what I drink 99% of the time so I know I need a reflux for a one pass distill...

Howdy Y'all From Texas

Just wanted to introduce my self. I just purchased a home wine making kit (for the wife) and am looking forward to making some wine. I bought all the equipment on-line and purchased the juice/chemical locally. I am also interested in possibly doing some home distillation. I drink Vodka and have been...
