Been a while

Okay: Got things figured out finally, I think. Ran a batch of Rum again. This is the easiest and cheapest that I have found to work while in trials. For those who do not remember: I was having trouble with very cloudy distillate. Usually started out clear as a bell for the heads, but progressively g...

Everyone seems to be missing a couple of key points: In the original post the use of bleach is stated. Big NO NO! Use only water and some mild dish soap very thouroughly rinsed out. Aus may be different in this respect, but here in the US the largest "pourable" ketsup bottle is about 3/4 q...

Real stoopid question

Help me understand thsi one: If you can distill water to use in your wash, and you can use commercially distilled water to make your wash: If you are running teh whoile works anyway, what difference does it make? Why doesn't the distillation of the wash serve do the same thing?

In the U.S. : By submitting the application you have given the BATF resonable cause to believe that you have constructed a still and/or are operating one. Under this guise they can apply for a no knock warrant to enter your property. If you have not applied for a permit they would have to have other...

As stated before there are two sides to the issue, but the bottom line is that at its very best on a computerized large scale plant, ethanol as fuel is an ecological and financial wash. You are going to have so much into the whole process to get set up and so much time invested in it that you will q...

One thing that I discovered with the "turkey fryer" propane setups: If you have a smaller still like mine (4 gallon) it is almost impossible to get them turned down low enough to cook it right. I have to have mine turned down so low that the flames are almost all beard or I am not able to ...

Just a note for yall: I keep seeing folks saying that tap water has chlorine in it. That is only accurate some of the time. Tap water has chlorine IF you live in the city. Country folks who have thier own wells do not typically have that. It is an additive in public wells, not private wells except i...

Yep, gonna be the smart ass here, but: I could not fail to notice in the original post that you said that the wash smelled and tasted good. Not trying to call your beer/wine making experience into question, but I have yet to smell or taste a wash that was "good." Although this is "ess...

Did my rum wash. Had a little trouble with the fuel tank just about the time I had my heads out. Restarted, took out another oz. Just to be safe. Ran out about 0.75 quarts, then it got milky on me again. That .75 quarts is at about 45 abv. The clear stuff ranges from 59 - 68 abv. This time it took m...

How do I test it?

I have some 60 abv apple spirits that I ran. Tastes great mixed with apple cider, but very sneaky. The question: After mixing, I would like to know what abv I have. Should I: A) Use the hydrometer before and after just like I would for a wash; B) Use the alcoholmeter on the finished product? I am in...

Should have clarified on that last post. I am only collecting in about 2 oz. amounts. I then sniff and taste to see how it is before mixing anything together. After eevrything was said and done, I ended up with two jars.

Thought that I would add this: Finally got my alcometer. What I collected from the cider run was the following: First pint that I saved was 61% abv second jar is only 1/2 pint and that came out as 45%. The rest I sent to the tails jug. I figure that was about 1/2 pint also.

Yep, I do have an airlock. I debated because some of the recipes that I read said not to use one, but in the end decided to go with what I know and see what happens.

Rum Question

Another stoooopid question. I have read that rum will ofen cause your wash to overflow the bucket. Mine is only everescing (sp?) as if it were a very strong soda. A lot of very small pops at the surface. I have not had any skin or "head" form on the wash. Is this a sign of a problem? or is...

If cost is a consideration: Look at the department stores for a 6 piece stainless set. It includes 4, 3, and 2 gallon pots with lids. The 4 gallon works good for the still, and the other two are good for mixing the mash, etc. Only costs $20 for the set at walmart. Good luck

Home supply stores carry a wide variety of thermostats that run on either 120v or 240v for baseboard heating units. They generally run around $15 up north here. All you have to do is hook them in line on the lamp cord.

Pineapple: Nope, just like a teenage boy in too much of a hurry to get er goin. I did have the hydrometer sitting by the bucket though, does that count? Peach: The cap dropped and I had (according to the calculator on the home site) 8.5% abv. For the apple I went slow and steady: Had about a 6.9 abv...

If you have a beer and wine making supply store nearby stop in and talk to the owner. They can order any yeast you want. My pot is a 4 galllon, last run was only two gallons of mash. Took me about 2 hours total from fire up to tails. (I did a lot of reading here and parent site first) I use propane to heat, and am assuming that the placement of the thermometer is at fault here: I start getting heads around 192°. On tw...

What am I doing wrong?

Stainless pot with a 17 foot 1/2" copper coil. First run after construction was a pineapple mash, I did use tap water which is a little on the hard side. Smelled something terrible and was very cloudy, dumped it into the tails jug. Second run: I used (commercially) canned peaches. This time it ...
