Re: 180 Proof From a Pot Still

OK... I just tested my meter with a bottle of Seagrams 7, 40% ABV. My meter read 45% @ 73 Deg F (room temp). Using the parent site calculator, this shows me that my meter is high by 3%. So worst case, I'm still pulling around 87% (90 x .03 = 2.7). After about a gallon at that ABV, I think it's fina...

Re: Take-off valve positioning...

I don't measure the abv during the run, my thermometer tells me the abv. So I don't care about the temperature of the distillate. But it's interesting. Never heard this opinion. I just right now look at your still pics. The valve is above the product cooler. It's always interesting when members cha...

Re: Take-off valve positioning...

My valve is below the product condenser and I've had zero problems with smearing... The 1/4" holds so little volume that it simply isn't an issue... The benefit is that the spirits come out at almost the perfect temperature and doesn't require temperature correction for %ABV readings... Without...

Thanks for that ss - I'm picking up a potential new boiler on Monday and have 5 metres of 2" copper, so that seems to equate to around 55" of column o/a :( - Not sure I'm going to have the headroom ! For a 2" column you'll want between 36" - 42" of packed column sect...

Soldering SS to copper is quite easy, especially a ss ferrule to copper.. you need Harris Stay Clean liquid flux, it is available in 1 oz for about $12 at welding shops or on ebay.. I paid ~$6.00 with tax for a 4oz bottle at the local welding supply house about a year ago... Paid about ~$12 and cha...

Re: Use of Hardwood Charcoal Lump for Filtering.

If you check into the "Lincoln County Method", as used by Jack Daniels, you'll discover that it takes a significant amount of time for the raw spirits to travel through the sugar maple charcoal that they produce on-site... Without looking it up, and memory fails me, it takes between hours ...

Re: Question about a Liebig for a 3" Boka

To simulate a worst case scenario, I put my 2" boka head in the sink and sprayed into the top of the head with about 10mL/sec of water which is more I can ever produce on a 5500 watt boiler. 5500W should only produce a maximum of 8.88 mL/sec condensate at 78degC This is a misconception... Your...

Tempered glass will break into small cubes nd I cant see any reason that could not be used for a packing medium. It does work but I'd go with older car windows or tempered patio door glass... I had some patio door glass that I tried once but I should have tumbled it to knock the sharp edges down......

If your reflux column is running efficiently there will be very little alcohol left in the boiler once take off slows...
