Re: storing new still question

Thanks all. That answers my question.
Prairiepiss, to answer yours, I can take the column off. Unscrews from a soldered on fitting. The hole is just too small to get inside to dry it out.

Re: storing new still question

They are pretty thin. Couldn't afford the $120 each for good thick pots. Guess I could just keep an eye on it and if it does go bad just invest in something a little thicker next time.

storing new still question

Hello all. I made a new pot still that is a bit larger than my last one. Instead of having to use a dough seal, which I hated doing, I welded two ss pots together. I soldered the column to a hole cut in the top (which is really the bottom side up) of the one one top. Basically it is like using a min...

Re: Amaretto recipe needed

So is amaretto not like whiskey in the sense that the flavor is mostly carried over through the distillation process? Is it basically a mixed drink? :?:

Amaretto recipe needed

Hello all! It has been a while on the board for me. I really love the new graphics and interface ease of use. Very up to date! I am searching for a good fairly easy to follow amaretto recipe. I read that most people on here just use a flavoring agent in their neutral spirits, but I use a pot still ...

Re: What the hell......cool though.

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, I think it is the sugars that is causing the chill haze. With this batch I didn't pitch any new yeast and just relied on the old. I was in a hurry and also didn't use any yeast energizer...mistake I think, as all the sugars didn't get converted. I didn't end up with a...

That subject line is for two different things. 1.) the new look of this forum. I have been gone a while, I come back and everything is all flipped backwards and all the icons for the forum are different.... Cool. The smiles are still the same......oh Thank God. What would I do without my familiar fr...

When I think i have a stuck wash I just make another starter bowl with part of the same type sugar as in the original wash and a lot of water. Heat it up to around 100F and pitch the yeast, pitch a lot of it. You can always strip it out later. Add some nutrients that you might have missed out on las...

Uncle Jesse, 86% is 172 proof, right? No offense. We used to be able to get Golden Grain at 198 proof, that's 99% abv. At least that is what the label said. We used to make hunch punch out of it. I held some in my mouth to spit on a flame one time....well I couldn't get the lighter lit......I tried ...

Good to know. Thanks guys. Jack Daniel's smoking chips huh? Those are oak? The only ones I can find in the stores around here are all hickory. What oak is this made of??

Hello all. Due to monetary restraints at the moment I'm not going to make an online purchase for oak to flavor my whiskey. The growing oaks in my area are Live Oaks, which have a bitter taste, so I'm told. I have an oak dow rod, 1.5" thick, reddish color oak. Looks like one you pick up at Lowe'...

I don't think it is malted. I believe it was whole grain. He ran it through the cracker for me to break it up a little. I am sorry, I guess I didn't explain enough in the beginning. I am not doing an all grain mash here. I am still going to be using sugar for the yeast to convert. So malting the rye...

preparing RYE.....need a little help

Hello shiners. Good day to you all. I went and bought a pound of Rye from a local brew shop to try and make a Tenn style type of whiskey. (I know I probably need more rye, but that is all they had left, I am only making a 5 gallon mash anyway.) I have a question. The rye I got is cracked but most of...

Anyone tried kayro syrup? It is sold in the pancake syrup section just like molasses. I know it is sweet, but I wonder if anyone has tried making a rum out of it. While I was looking I was wondering about that buttered flavored syrup. I wonder if you can use that to ferment a butter rum?? :D :D Soun...

Don't use Sugar!! Hell, I wouldn't even use salt now. Anything that will absorb water might not be the best idea, ie. salt, sugar, etc. Sand might be the best thing. You could also wear thick gloves and gently heat it up with a torch, then slowly and gently bend it without anything inside. Then move...

So a hydrometer is a different instrument than a proofer? I thought you just did some math to get the specific gravity.

So why did the other wash read 8% abv on the proofer and this one is reading below 0?

proofing the mash. Got a problem.

Ok guys, I have a little conundrum here. On a previous wash I used a Tralle/proofer and it registered at 8% abv (16 proof). On the wash I have going now I tested it and it is below 0. So that would mean that according to the proofer it has less alcohol than water. :? That doesn't sound right. The pr...

If you don't clear it or let it clear on its own then I would do a stripping run first then do a spirit run. You have a reflux column, so just open her all the way up and don't worry about collecting heads and tails and stuff, just push it. Then dilute and run again separating the heads and tails. Y...
