I suggested Dooley put one on his pot rig a while back. He stared at me through squinted eyes and said "I ain't never seen a thermometer with taste buds".

Make sure you de-pressurize first and then make sure again. While removing the retaining ring make sure you keep anything you value - hands, eyes, forehead, etc, - out of the path of the valve. Not tying to make you paranoid (OK, I am) but this can be dangerous and no opportunity for a second chance.

Re: noob q: liquid yeild from corn mash
1. Dry and liquid malt are concentrated forms of barley malt that have been concentrated or spun dried after conversion (mashed). The enzyme activity is over and further deactivated during processing and the sugars are basically all that are left. Good for fermenting and nothing else. 2. Cracked cor...

It is true they have no enzymes to contribute but not for flavor only. They are almost pure sugars.dried malt and most caned malt does not have enzymes in them, there added to beer for flavor only

Re: Old Copper fire Extinguisher
I have one of those old copper fire extinguishers but most of them were not pressurized; they were of the soda/acid type. They contained an acid liquid and a dry soda (base) material that mixed when the container was inverted. Remember the old mixing vinegar and baking soda trick in school? When the...

but is there any precautions that I should take on these larger batches. Probably not. Depending on where you at. If you got close neighbors, next time you been away for a while to let your nose reset, stop a couple hundred yards down wind and see if you can smell it. Johnny Law knows that smell too.

beat the crap out of it and it's fixed now.
What I was saying is that ferments are scalable as long as you got a way to keep them from over heating.

Re: Does size matter??....(wash size that is)
If the size of the wash had anything to do with it, professional distilleries would have to wait months. But they don't wait any longer than any body else WITH A 5 GALLON BATCH. tHEY JUST MATCH THE YEAST PITCH WITH THE SIZE OF THE WASH.

I've eat carp.
Smaller ones out of the river we called suckers. Ain't too bad with the mud vein cut out and soaked in butter milk over night before deep frying, IMHO.
Lots of small bones though. Got to keep some loaf bread on hand just in case.

I've been brewing my own for many years. I can't stomach store bought any more.
It will just keep getting better and better as you learn and work the kinks out.
About 10% of the store bought price too

Where did you get the keg?
Was the Sankey valve already removed? If so, what had been in the keg previously?
If I couldn't answer these with confidence, I'd be scared.
