I was talking to a trapper the other day. He took up trappin as a hobby after retiring from the paper mill. He was braggin and carring on about how much he had grossed on the last fur check. Re: Question about commercial trucking
I work as a saftey super for a logging company. Wood is trucked to the mill by independant brokers. I know guys with 15 years experience that can't even get insurance.
Commercial Insurance has been screwed up ever since 9/11.
Just the mere mention of Insurance wrecks my day.

Get a SS stock pot--not much more money than aluminum and only a little harder to find.
Do a search--lots of reasons not to use aluminum. Saftey first!!

Re: Questions on copper and molassas.
I found a liebig condenser made outta 1/2" copper pipe running thru a 3/4 " piece just so much easier to build--hook it up to the sink taps and turn on the cold water. But then I have unlimited amounts of fresh water.

Re: Old sailors,,,, and no water
Ships in the old days rarely ran out of water. That water went stale pretty fast too. Water while in the dories or the life boats was another matter. The math is rather interesting--1and quarter gallons per man per day--maybe possible with light alochol wine but totally impossible with rum. Remeber ...

Re: First batch... lots of questions
I live in a very cold climate also. -40 cold. I started with birdwatchers and it is slow compared to a mollases wash or UJSSm. It does make a very nice neutral even with a slow ferment. I ferment in an upstairs bedroom that I doubt ever gets above 15C. I put a five gallon pail on a small table with ...

I actually poured some foreshots into the windshield washer once to keep it from freezing.
Never thought what it would smell like when I went to wash off the road salt.
If a cop would have stopped me I'd had some 'splaning to do.

Re: Busy day (week) canning
Talked to an ole woman here who used to do it. Her reciepe is real simple. Half a teaspoon of 'Tender-quick' salt--thats the one with sodium nitrite in it. Cut the moose meat in small cubes and pack the jar as full as you can. Boil it in big pot for at least 3 hours. It makes a clear red juice that ...

Re: Busy day (week) canning
I have seen old women in this community can moose meat and partridge by just packing the meat into glass jars and boiling on an open fire for 3 or 4 hours. A lot of fish was done this way in the old days too. I have always wondered about the saftey of this practice. Botulism you know! Its not done m...
