Re: Making Charcoal (White Oak)

The best I ever tried was taking white oak sticks and carmelizing in the oven at 200 F while wrapped in aluminum foil. Then I took the sticks and held them with tongs over a flame to get a charred layer. They worked to age 3 different 5 gallon carboys full of spirit before even thinking of losing th...

Re: rE-BOILING STONES AND INTERNAL HEAT SOURCES

You will definately need to find some way to control the input to the elements via an infinite variable switch except for one great thing we have in our favor...a 1200 watt water heater element is handled very well with a 2" column. If you wander away from these two sizes then you will likely have t...

Re: Moonshine still bust in Alabama

I did some checking and it is in fact illegal to brew beer in Alabama without a license. In Alabama you can make up to 100 gallons of wine per adult up to 2 adults in a residence if you produce all the fruit on your own property. I think Alabama is one of only two states that do not allow a person t...

Moonshine still bust in Alabama

This is an article posted in the St. Clair Times, a newspaper in St. Clair County Alabama about a moonshine still found on a tip to local law enforcement. I sincerely hope the article is incorrect when it paraphrases Lt. Mike Reese of the Alabama Beverage Control Board as stating it is illegal to ma...

Re: Distilling on History Channel

Found this one while reading a magazine (Garden and Gun) in the doctor's office a few months back. It may have been mentioned here online in my absence. Apparently someone on the forum was interviewed???

Big Green Egg

Got the Big Green Egg grill for Christmas....anyone else have one? I've been reading over their website and the forum they have. They have a large cult following over there.

Anyone have any hints and tips you can share?

For all the Florida Gators on the site....

I recently heard that Tim Tebow may not be illegible for his upcoming bowl game because he had signed a 6 million dollar contract with Kleenex.

Re: i cant belive its done!!!

If you have some more column pipe you will eventually want to extend the column and make it taller. And there is nothing wrong with a column cap AS LONG AS THERE IS A VENT HOLE. Look at a tea kettle design, it has a hole in the cap right? I like to put a small piece of paper torn from the corner of ...

The it's built properly, the plates that catch the condensed vapor overlap and the liquid will fall to the outlet. It is a pot still when you leave the outlet valve open and not restricting flow back to the column. You can place a double coil within the two inch pipe. No need to use a piece of three...

As soon as you've read the safety precautions to follow....just do it is the best advice. You can tell someone everything you know and it helps, but is no match for rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands to smell like foreshots! Welcome aboard.

Jesse, For the volume you are talking about doing, you will likely have to use a vessel with a suction applied. This will create a negative pressure and "pull" the liquid through a micron filter pad. Contact me and I can describe better- we used them in the labs all the time. Easy to build and would...

Freezing fruit will rupture the individual pulp cell walls and actually make them easier to juice when thawed out again.

Just my first thoughts on this.... Lots of mandarin oranges would be used and little flavor would come across when used in a wash and then run, especially when compared to the smaller number of oranges that could be used to soak after a run. Lots of citrus fruit could make your wash too acidic, woul...
