Re: First CCVM vinegar run question.

Nice looking still! I have a CCVM. It will run differently with ethanol vapour; it is heavier than water vapour and some will find the offtake and run down to the product condenser. You will need an extension above the offtake, as others have said, to make sure there is a reasonable oppor...

Re: First CCVM vinegar run question.

Thanks for some very useful information. I'll make some changes and make an column extension and see what difference it makes.

The takeoff is 2" to 1.5" to 1/2".

As you can see in the image, it's not the access to the liebig that's restricted, but the top of the column.

Re: First CCVM vinegar run question.

It might be that with packing and insulation it makes all the difference. But I might have to make the top of the column taller?

First CCVM vinegar run question.

Hi, I was performing a vinegar run for the first time on my newly build CCVM still. First some technical info. The column (not packed or insulated yet) is 54mm (2") diameter, 1400mm (55") tall. It has a liebig condenser 15mm (19/32") diameter with a 22mm (7/8") jacket and a total...

Re: Triple wound condenser size.

Hmm. It's packed pretty tight, so the coils are touching each other (no dirty thoughts ;) ). But it's proberly packed too tight as SS suggest. It's made from 3/16 soft annealed copper tube. I had to cheat a bit because I wanted to resuse two old coils. So I took them apart and reassembled it. It's g...

Triple wound condenser size.

I'm building a modular still and just finished the pot still head. But I'm wanting to build a reflux head also and found the ccvm still type to be interesting. I'm using 2" copper pipe for all my builds. I have made a approx. 6" triple wound condenser some time ago and was wondering if it ...

Re: Different gin basket.

Ahh of course. That makes sense. Because of a easier vapor path, the gasses would go around the filter. Hmm. I have to give this some consideration then. I'll try it out, just for the fun of it with scrubbers packed around to give some vapor restriction. But I'll also take your advise with a hop bag...

Re: Different gin basket.

I could use the filter holder to hang mesh balls inside the column bottom as you suggested. If the possibility for blockage is too great, I will not use my filter.

Re: Different gin basket.

Do you think the filter could block the column? It's only 1" in diameter. Where do you think the problem could occur?
I was thinking of doing a strip run to have 12-15 liters of 30-40% alcohol and use that in the spirit run. Normal procedure, but on a smaller scale.

Re: Different gin basket.

A quick measuring shows that it holds 36 grams of juniper berries. There's some space around the berries, so it might take approximately 40 grams of herbs/spices.

Hi Odin, thanks for tuning in. I'm not quite sure. It holdt a bit more than 100ml (3.38 fl. Oz.). How much that amounts to, I don't know yet. I'll have to check.

Fitted with copper scrubbers. Not a tight fit for this setup. Don't want too much reflux.

Re: Different gin basket.

That's my thoughts also. It might give off no, to mild flavor (depending on the spices/herbs) or normal expected flavor. I hope that it will create some sort of turbulence inside the tube. At least enough to carry over flavors. If it fails in its purpose in the pot still mode, I'm sure it will be wo...

Different gin basket.

After a long hiatus, I'm starting up again. I'm building a modular 2" still. The modular pot still head is almost finished, and I'm planning a ccvm still head. But before I get to that I've tried to construct a gin basket for vapor infused spirits. This my take on it. Think it'll work? 20161222...

Re: building a worm specs

I apolligize for my apparent ignorance on the subject. I did not know that it would have such huge impact on the functions. I use ice for my boka recirculating cooling and have not had any problems in that manner described. But apparently the same physics cannot be applied here. I don't own a worm, ...

If you have access to ice, then use it to cool your water. Recirculation of a water tub is also good. I have heard alot about people using bottles of frozen water to cool down the water. Might be an idea.

Very cool design DAD. I had plans for something simular a while back, but coulden't find a "Y" that was large enough. And import costs was sky high for the ones I could get . So im on the classic dephleg. ;)

Re: 2" dephlag size?

Sounds like 1/2" is the go. All I can say is, why build it so you need cloth, spirals, scrubby etc, build it to work without added accessories. Less is more. Find information from members that have built and used dephlegmators, not members with theories on them. KISS. Did you just call me stup...

Re: 2" dephlag size?

Some thing to keep in mind, inside a Dephlag vapor is rising and liquid is falling at the same time. If the tubes are too small the vapor may restrict the downward flow of liquid. Thanks for the advise. Im aware of flooding problems due to small tubes, and to my understanding, I need to go no small...

Re: 2" dephlag size?

Super answer DAD! I think I understand. I'll look further into the design and bet on something smaller. For turbulance in the tubes, could I put small spirals that touch the inside wall of the tubes? It would'nt be as restrictive as mesh filled tubes, but enough to make the vapor touch the walls. Ju...

Solder is not just solder....

When soldering or brazing, make sure that it is 100% lead free. Lead is among the most dangerous metals you'd properly come in contact with. Or rather stay out of contact with. Lead leeches into your drink and into your body where it stays and does damage to your nervous system. Cases with severe le...

Looks like there's more then one way to skin this cat. Question is just to choose the best method. Most of you seem to agree om using 1/2" tube. Is this correct ? This is new science for me and im trying to understand the basics.
