Re: Why exactly?

Beer is the world's third most consumed beverage behind tea and water. The fact that distilled spirits continue to be banned from home production has everything to do with tradition and essentially nothing to do with logic, and trust me, very little to do with tax revenue, as I sincerely doubt it w...

Much agreed rad. As someone once told me; "I'd rather be a smartass than a dumbass." By sharing the knowledge and experience that we have we only can educate the ones that are willing to listen and learn. The ones that have troubles, cause problems, or don't really care are the ones that w...

Re: I am a HeadCase...

Being in a place that the temps get very high in the summer I decided to take a break from the building at the only location that I had to build was in the garage (temps can be up to 145F at that time). I promised myself that I would get back into it when the temps cooled for the winter but my newbo...

Re: Building a Bok from scrap....column question

+1 beelah Yeah, go with a Pot Still this time. It appears you have everything in order for it. But, if you really wanted to make another Boka then cut about 8-10" of the 2.5 for the base of the column to fit your current 2.5" fittings, then reduce into the entire 1.5", packed, and ano...

Check the rates for metals in your area. This day and age Copper is nearly gold. But you can do a lot with Stainless.

Re: Cooling water adjustment question

Dumb question, but you didn't turn up the flow by also using the Hot side of your sink? Some old sinks, like what I have at home, has a sweet spot for the cold water. But if I turn it up it begins to push water from both the hot and cold side actually causing the water from the faucet to become warm...

Re: Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

Another option would be to cut a single slit into the side of the one 90 and use a screw type hose clamp... That is a very good idea. I didn't even think of that. Another though I had was to drill a hew holes into the coupler side of the 90 and put a single drilled and tapped hole into the top side...

Re: Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

How would one keep the degree angle stable with just flour paste? The neck would have to be supported with something.

If I had to use a stable degree that I would solder the elbows at, what would be the best for rum?

Re: Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

It's far better to have that adjustability than to be locked into a specific geometry... Unless ya prefer to be hunched over on the floor while yer collectin....Ew I love that. Sadly, I think this is what may happen to this build whether I like it or not. Ceiling room with keg attachments, I think ...

Re: Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

Using two 90's is not a problem... Kentucky Shinner even sells a pot still head with the same basic design for take off height adjustment... Re: Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

@ HeadCase, Instead of your non specific narrative of a few 90 degree elbows, a few 45 degree elbows, several feet of pipe, reducers, street elbows and the such perhaps it would be better if you posted a quick simple drawing of your proposed Pot Still design that you are attempting to build. That w...

Does a Pot Still design require a planar vapor path?

I came across some parts at a local scrap yard and I am now able to complete a 2ft tall 2"ID Potstill column. With these fittings and my Pot Still (for Rum, Whiskey and hopefully Scotch) and I can set the angle of incline/decline that will go into the 3ft leibig to any measure, but the path wou...

Re: I am a HeadCase...

I just picked up about $120 in fittings for about $30. Talking with the guy there he is going to set the fittings aside so I no longer have to go dumpster diving. I can probably get some good over sized fittings. I had my hand on a few 4" elbows. I'm willing to pick some up to sell to you folks...

Re: Help me finish my still

Why is the valve upside down?! The mechanism for flow within the valve may hinder any use of it. I am not sure if this is a large needle-valve or what but the size of that valve would be enough to disipate a lot of heat causing it to condense within the valve and fall back into the column. I...

Re: Cane or pump?

I just threw those drawings together to give folks the idea of how it works all around. The idea is that the riser at the bottom sits above the trub left in the fermenter so it would disrupt all the nasties at the bottom. The mesh idea and OD's setup also works out very well. These are all straight ...

The amount of energy dissipation across the heating area would be a complete waste. You would spend more on your electric bill then you did on the wash.
