Re: 3" 'mini'

Saw a neat one at Wally World the other day. It is a wireless BBQ thermo. The probe hooks to a base and then you can carry the head around (up to 100ft range), just like a cordless phone. It didn't have any specs other than a min/max temp for degrees F/C though. Probably only reads whole numbers li...

Re: Jack daniels smoking chips

The longest i could manage was a month, but i dont think there was enough chips in it as it stopped getting getting darker after 2 weeks, and it wasnt very dark. i figured it would be better to under oak it then to over oak it so i sorted thru the bag and grabbed 6 larger pieces with char on them. I...

Re: blue corn

it's been a while, but i finally got back around to the blue corn. Instead of mashing the corn(that didnt work so well), i figured i would use some malted barley to convert as i know how to do that for the most part. It went pretty smooth with the biggest differences being the colors. After cracking...

Re: Jack daniels smoking chips

An update is overdue i guess. The JD chips worked real well in my opinion. Really mellowed it out and gave it a nice flavor and color(i have no experience with any other wood products, so keep that in mind). No new pictures because, well, there isnt any left which i think is a good sign :-) Never ta...

May i ask why not? I only ask because i do collect in wide mouth open containers and am curious if there is an inherent danger that i am missing.
Thanks

Re: blue corn

Thank you Uncle Jesse, wet milling sounds like the way to go. less effort to mill and little to no water loss due to the corn absorbing it as it is already fully waterlogged. My report and how the hooch tastes seems to have been postponed by another week as round one of corn malting goes to the corn...

Re: blue corn

How are you planning on drying them DK? i had initially planned on putting them in a smoker, but after reading more i am left to believe that if i am going to use them immediately, then there is no need for drying. So they are going to be stripped of their roots and acrospires and placed right in t...

Jack daniels smoking chips

So i decided to try aging some of this nice and smooth corn liquor. Well, to make a long story short, i had a hell of a time finding white oak to use so i decided to use some of the jack daniels smoking chips. I am no fan of jack daniels, or really any sour mash bourbon or whisky but i sure love thi...

Re: blue corn

very true trthskr4, kinda funny that i happen to be posting this from a mac as well :) I have no clue how this corn tastes or really why a farmer would bother with growing it, but the price was right. Here is a pic from this afternoon when i drained the bucket and spread them in my pan. They are ger...

Re: Enzymes vs malt

You can get them by the pound at E85 http://www.e85machines.com/supply.htm . The prices on enzymes appear good, but stay away from the DAP- very expensive. I've not dealt with them. So, I can give no recommendation. I wouldnt recommend these folks, here is a quote from their page: We have one of th...

Got a bushel of blue corn given to me last weekend, so i thought i would try to malt it.
So far so good, i'll get more pics as the process goes but here is one of the corn before doing anything to it.

For the mash recipes calling for rainwater, be careful

I've noticed some recipes, and some distillers, recommend rainwater for their mashes/washes. Be careful out there, you may be breaking the law at least in Colorado :-) If the gov't can get this passed, then rainwater may again be legal to collect. Thank you for the advice. 1/4" it is. Ended up using a 5/16" wooden dowel to wrap the inner coil and a 1.25" wooden dowel to wrap the outer coil. Used one of my 3/8" coil mistakes (and there are many) to fashion a coupler that i'll get soldered up tomorrow. Overall length is 16&q...

Howdy all, Been lurking and reading for a while now and finally have a question i cant find an answer to with the search feature. This is my first still and decided on the valved reflux. I'll be using the all 2" adaptation as noted in many posts. My question revolves around the condenser coil. ...
