Re: Liqueur preservation..
Since you added honey it might be a little bees wax coming out of solution and stratifying to the top. I had this happen to me once with a limoncello I made into which I added honey. You might want to pour it all back into a tall slender container, let it settle for a week or 2, then skim the wax of...

It could have been an atmospheric expansion tank for a hydronic heating system. Coated with lead for corrosion resistance. You better get a lead testing kit and verify!!!

Re: Parent Site Calculator Accuracy For Commercial Stills
I see all the calculators as very good and accurate. I even use then to backdoor some calculations. You can use your actual heat up times to estimate your actual watts or BTU's. This will get you to the efficiency of your gas burner. EXCEPT, that product Condenser Size thing. Either it assumes some...

Personally, I'd be going with a more rigid structured material like scoria/lava rock, marbles, ceramic saddles, raschig rings, or SPP... Thanks for the input rad! My concern is that the more rigid materials require more column height than I have available, at least according to the calc's. In my mi...

Re: Thermowell Placement ?
... I can only assume that there's a temp differential between the two therms with that placement so in my learning phase I'm wondering how they are used to provide feedback during the run. There is a difference. I like to keep the top temp reading just under 180 degrees. The bottom gauge usually i...

Re: Thermowell Placement ?
FMH, I have temp. gauges below and above the defleg (see photo). The one below the defleg gives me a heads up that things are changing towards the end of the run before any of the nasties make it past the defleg. Once I see the temp start to rise I go back into full reflux to stack the hearts at the...

Re: testing, after the build
We usually test low pressure natural gas piping at 3 PSI. That's more than enough to find a leak. Pump it up, watch for 1/2 hour. If pressure holds, you're good to go. If it drops, get out your spray bottle of soapy water and soak your joints. Bubbles will indicate location of your leak(s).

Re: Effect of Defleg temperature in a Flute
I wonder where they "measured inside the defleg" since its cold at top (water enter) and warm at bottom (exit). Jimbo, isn't this backwards? I was under the impression that the cold inlet connection to the defleg is on the bottom. This way when your measuring the warm outlet temperature a...
