Re: Prayers wanted
My prayers go out to the Husker family, to Barb and Blanik. I have read that ginger really helps dealing with the chemo nausea. You can make a nice tea out of powdered ginger, or just using fresh ginger for the tea, or ginger supplements. Ginger is also great for an upset stomach, motion sickness an...

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
First time making five gallons of Welch's wine today.
Recipe called for adding an acid blend, but the starting ph was 3.0 due to the citric and ascorbic acid in the Welch's so I didn't add anymore.
It's happily bubbling away right now.

Slow Spirit Run
A few days ago I did my first long and slow run (approx 16 hour). I couldn't believe my eyes when looking at the reading... hour, after hour at the same high mark on the meter. :D Wow, much different experience than running quick at 1300W for the low wines. Before this, I did quick stripping of mult...

Re: more on cork
Well I was interested because I like the idea of a good roll of pure cork so I went to the Home Depot and bought the same thing you did. I believe it's 100% cork, but that refers only to the wood. It's definitely small bits of cork wood held together by some sort of epoxy or enamel or something. Al...

I found natural cork at my local big box store (Home Depot) in the kitchen section. It was in a roll, packaged as cupboard liner, 100% natural cork. No rubber, no glue in it (or so the packaging stated), and can be cut to spec. I looked for musical cork originally, but it didn't come in the size I n...

I was reading some more this morning and I found this post by wineo: If you put in enough sugar at the start to reach 16-18%wash,You would need 500-600 billion yeast cells to handle the sugar, and have the neutrents just right. This would require that you make a large starter{1 1/2 gallon}about 2 days...

Just as an add-on note. As others have said, not all yeasts are the same. Went to make my enlarged version of the test wash 2 days ago and as I did not have sufficient quantity of yeast left, purchased some more of a different brand. Did everything the same and my re-hydration of the new yeast show...

I'm don't know what the maximum power I can put into it running on 120V while still being safe and not blowing anything up. Question for you HWG... Do you unp...

Nice templates. Those will make things alot easier for the build. Advice: I used 2 copper end caps for the plates. If I had to do it again, I would have used a bigger plate, because the end caps were the same length as the pipe and I had a hard time soldering them in without them slipping out. If th...

Re: My Hotplate
I got one of these because I can't use the kitchen stove and wanted to boil on my shop bench. At 1000 watts, this isn't proving to be a very powerful unit for small batch boils. I'm guessing a 1500 watt model would fit the bill. Your thoughts (other than going outside with gas)? http://img.photobuc...
