Re: Coppersea
Hey, Thank you all for your encouragement and good wishes. I'm having a great time doing this and I'd strongly encourage anyone here who's thinking of getting into legit commercial craft distilling to get out there and do it. Hundreds of small distilleries are opening up, a lot of these outfits have...

sorry barney. I got lazy about quoting... that was a reply to this: I know of no stove that has a setting below 200, either. In fact, come to think of it, I know of no stove that has ANY temperature setting on it at all. Do you? It has a power setting, but that doesn't have a feedback control loop t...

I added them twice, at around 150-160, and then 10 degrees cooler once I realized the bottom of the pot was warmer than the top. I'm going to ferment on the grain, so I'm not too worried about it taking longer. I just wish I could see SOMETHING happening so I know the enzymes I put in weren't alrea...

Do see how your stinky product airs out though.
See how some of it does with toasted or charred wood.
give at least a sample of it some time.
Even if it doesn't fix it you'll learn something.

Re: Blood wine?! :D
There probably aren't very many animals that can be used for fermenting. most mammal blood really isn't very sweet at all and doesn't contain much in the way of convertible carbohydrates. I expect that the presence of large amounts or protein and iron would also foul stuff up pretty badly if you tri...

Re: Need help sealing water bath to the still
Why do you feel you must have a water bath?
You can direct fire positively chunky mash if you are careful.
In a round bottom pot you can apply heat to everything except for the lowest point on the kettle and get a great efficient boil.

Too add, when I run too slow, I find the blending really difficult. The jars are too distinct and I stumble around not knowing what to do. The "middle" jars, for example, is too clean. I try and figure out a speed whereby the transitions are not as distinct and the middle parts seem to ha...

Re: smoking barley fail
peat smoked malt owes its existence to the tradition of drying the fresh green malt over peat fires... or peat smolders really.
Starting with already malted and dried barley might not have the desired result even with re-wetting.

In my experience running a still takes a hell of a lot more brain space and time out of your life than building one. You can build any still you possess the hand skills to execute in spare minutes here and there over the course of a month of sundays and it'll turn out as well as it would have if you...

Well if it has been treated? By the post it stated it will not grow. But can it be milled cooked and converted? Sure it can't be malted. But can it be used in a mash after its been treated? Four way... Of course the "garbage in, garbage out" theory isn't true 100% of the time. But you have to admit it holds true FAR more many times than not. If that wasn't the case, everyone on this forum, myself included, would be huge advocates of turbo yeast. Just sayin.... Actually... I ...
