Re: Plastic tubing for siphon
Thanks for the advice guys.
I use a Stainless Funnel now.
Its crazy that you could spend 40 or 50 bucks on a bottle of inported booze thats been run through plastic or rubber.
I 'll rig up some sort of copper contraption to get the job done.

Plastic tubing for siphon
I recently started watching a show called the "Thirsty Traveler". The show is about a guy who travels the world drinking the local booze and checking out the distilleries and wineries. I've noticed in several of the distilleries they use plastic tubing to siphon booze from one vessel to another. Sin...

Re: Is carbon filter necessary after strip NS run?
I don't have an opinion on this subject at this time but have been pondering this subject. I'm on about my 10th sugar was batch and while I always get a good product it’s not exactly Grey Goose. I always collect in 3 cup increments and number my jars. I start in the middle and work my way out. I usu...

Re: New Still First Test
When I asked this question the guys here suggested making a cheap sugar wash and running it through. The Eth will clean out your still. Personally I did everything. Lemon Juice, Vinagar, Acid then some wash. It was really clean when I finished with it. Now if I do any soldering I don't use flux. Jus...

Re: Elements for a keg
Matty,
If you go with 2 elements make sure you position your upper element low enough that it won't go dry on spirit runs if you have to start and stop.
Its always a crap shoot for me if my upper element is still in the low wines after starting and stoping a couple times.

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone using backset to make vodka. I thought the whole point was to keep the flavors out???

Don't worry tripnoncid. When you taste your first batch it will all be worth it. Plus just look at GBM's posts and see how many upgrades you can make to your still. Its YOUR STILL now. Not something you paid 300 bucks for and now are going to take apart and make into a quality still. I waited 6 mont...

So Co taste like Flinestone Vitamins soaked in Beam to me. I can't stand that shit. I have to add Black Velvet, Ukon Jack and Wild Turkey to my all time undrinkable list. On second thought I'm with Tater. All of them. Now I just need to make some of my own. I have my second batch of UJSM bubbling no...

Interesting question.
I think it will be ok.
Don't take my word for it though. I'm sure others with more experiance will chime in.

I'd start doing some things that piss her off. If she doesn't respect your wishes then I'd stop respecting hers. If my wife pulled something like that I'd throw all of her shit in the front yard. Of course she would never call the cops on me.

Re: Winemaking - How much sugar to add?
Do you have a hydrometer? If you don't then you really need to get one. You'll be stoked. When you do get one just to a google search and you'll get more info than you want on how to use it. For wine a usually shoot for 10 to 12% depending on what your making. Sounds like your new to this stuff. Rem...

I'm going to finish this run and start working on my pot still. I just started 50 gallons of 9% Wineo simple sugar wash. Hopefully I have my pot still finished by the time its ready to run.

Hawke,
If I ran a neutral in the 80's with a pot still would that make exceptable product or do you need to have it in the low 90's?

Spirit run that won't end
Ok I started with probably about 14 to 14.5 gallons of 40% low wines from a BWSW mash. I'm running a offset reflux with a 44 inch column stuffed with copper mesh and 3000w to start with 1500w on full for the run. This is my first real spirit run and I've been running for days now. Probably like 5 ti...

How are you detecting Methanol?
From what I've learned here it takes a lot of Mthanol to hurt you but its still not something you want to drink.

Thanks for the info. I thought I screwed up.
Do you normally rinse the corn at least or should I just be dumping it in? I can't wait to taste this mash.

Seriously? I get caught up in the fact that certain things don't travel with the vapor but this looks like a bucket of dirty water.

Its going much better. I just finished my first 12 gallon strip of the day and am heating up the next batch right now. Thanks for the info Husker. I didn't explain very good last night. My boiler is a 15.5 gallon keg. I have 60 gallons of wash ready to strip. I'm filling it with 12 gallons at a time of 10% BWSW. Before As-Ol-Joe set me straight I was keeping the heat around 175 with no reflux. Now after the full 300...

I'm at a high elevation. My water temp is really low. I'm pretty sure if I run at my max temp. 2 1500 W water heater elements I could knock it down for a stripping run with my water supply.
