Mate,
There a lot of places there that do stainless welding, take one of the drawings for a LM or VM to them and they will have it made in a couple of days and it will be done

Re: Condenser Controlled Columns
I have made maybe 20 - 25 of the condenser controlled LM's, they work really well the only issue I had was I notching the tube which took awhile. Very cost effective design and works great just takes a little longer to make than a Double reducer Boka for example. I have not done one of the condenser...

Brazing you can use any filler, to be defined as brazing it needs to be over xxx Celsius, under xxx Celsius it is classified as "soldering"

Re: Put you welding suggestions here.
Don't call it brazing, I have been down that path beforeThe phosphorous rods that plumbers use (down here in Oz) isn't soft solder. It is a brazing alloy usually with 2% Ag and a liquidus/solidus range of 645 - 820°C. This gives it much more workability which plumbers need.

The above build would not be that hard, one cut then butt weld it. Shotgun and you are in business.
Personally I like to TIG everything but most people don't have a TIG or know how to use one. I suppose it all comes down to what you have available.

I have seen a similar design but the dome was concave not convex, I think it as in Lebanon. When I saw it I thought it was an interesting design, very old school and not something you see in the West.

Re: Worm?
If it is annealed such as a 304 grade you can wind it as you would a normal worm out of copper, not sure how tight you could wind it. There are several companies around that will do it for you or you could do it yourself.
I priced annealed 304 tube before and from memory it was not cheap.

Re: Rust in weld?
Little bit of penetration in the weld, if you use a steel file it will make the problem worse as it is made from steel. It just needs to be cleaned up with a small flap disc that is made for stainless so it does not cause contamination. Not a big deal, 5 minute job and you'll never have the problem ...

With a 2 inch boka with only 3 scrubbers in the top of the column, run it up take heads off as per normal then open up the needle valve. Take hearts at about 88% then when you come into tails stop your run as per normal. Takeoff rate for hearts is very fast. Bring it back to 60% and oak it for 3 - 6...

Re: Pot stilling with a detuned LM reflux still
You can use a detuned reflux still for flavoured spirits by removing most of the packing, you can also strip with it. Distillate will come off pretty warm. A post still is the best option for flavoured spirits and reflux for neutral spirits. Some people don't want to make or buy 2 stills though.

Very interesting, I was wondering how it goes with stainless since there is no shielding gas. "Though this medium cannot completely replace the absolutely inert gas (for example, argon), it makes it possible to successfully weld most jobs where a non-oxidizing or protective atmosphere is necess...

Using a microwave to heat a highly flammable liquid is an extremely BAD idea    There are plenty of hot surfaces close to the magnetron would could easily ignite alcohol vapors. The thing is unless you spend a lot of cash on a calibrated thermometer you are most likely going to get an inaccurate reading. Then you have the other variables you need to take account of such as level above sea level which is going to affect temp readings. For me I won't go off what my thermomete...

Rockhampton is a huge cattle area, they feed mollasses to the cattle. If you know any cattle people they will get it for you for 40c or less (probably around 30c a kg). As mentioned produce stores will also have it.

I would say get him to TIG it if he has the equipment and skills to do it, if he can't TIG it then soldering / brazing is an easier option.

A 3/8 double wound with cold finger with stainless scrubber stuck in it works, there are heaps of options for a condenser that will work. As already mentioned as long as it knocks down all the vapour. A few centering rings in the coulumn and you are good to go.

Re: Does a boka need cooling on the take off tube?
Most LM reflux columns will benefit from having a product condenser because the "liquid" is going to be hot... CM and VM designs already have product condensers so it's a non-issue with them... I've only run an LM once without a product condenser and won't ever do it again because I lost ...

With some fittings yes with others you can spend 5 mins per fitting which is not to bad if you are making 1 Liebig but if you make more than one it becomes really old really quicklybellybuster wrote:It really does only take 20 seconds with a file.

You can crimp it, you can also use a hammer and give the 1/2 inch a hit along the length of it with the tube sitting on a piece of wood. It will banana up but it is copper so it is easy enough to straighten out again. The 3/4 still goes over it fine. It does increase efficiency and you can still put...

we just put a block of wood on top of the fitting and banged the pipe through it.
