Re: very new to this world ..

Welcome Jenny. I heard stories of my Gmaw as a little girl hearing a knock on the door late at night when her dad ran the areas grind mill. She said there would sometimes be a lil bottle in the bottom of the sack of ground grain... :D

Re: Wild yeast

In a book I bought on bread making the author suggest that any yeast culture bought from exotic locations will be overtaken with-in two or three generations from the natural cultures found in the areas where you live. The book is "The Bread Making Apprentice" I have made many sourdough sta...

That's so 70's.. :lolno:

Re: Ideal boiler size

This is something I am interested in also. Where is the tipping point in having a boiler and set up large enough to have room for error in distillation and small enough to escape the all seeing eye of suspicion. I wanted to run a 50 gal boiler, but I have heard that it is a large system. 50 Gallon ...

This is an excellent post and puts my mind to rest about one danger of this craft. This is worthy of a bump back to the top.

I am glad I found this place. I have been reading for hours a day for 4-5 days. I think I could make a run from memory by now. Just waiting on the money for the build.

Safe Running.

Re: Corn Mashes - Observations and thoughts

Are you suggesting that you are using an all corn ferment with out an active yeast culture? I assume it is like making sourdough bread. A little flour and water mixed and left on the counter will eventually ferment. I am going to start with a small batch to build the culture and add the started batc...

Re: Where do I start?

I'm assumin ya got some Gatlinburg shine made by the Smoky Mtn Distillery. Well, not to far from there they busted a fella just the other day and his still was a LOT smaller than the 50-100 gal you're talkin bout. He had about 50 gal a shine and now he's in jail. Glad you're reconsiderin that. Them...

Cleaning the Pot

Thinking of my first build, I plan to use a copper boiling pot. Mostly due to the ease of working with the metal compared to SS. (I can Weld copper and have the tools to do so). That being said. I have heard that the copper oxidation should be cleaned out of the boiling pot. How is a boil pot kept c...

Re: Where do I start?

Thanks, I did not ralize that a 100 or 50 gal boil pot was big. :wtf:

I will stick to something that will not get me in trouble. Thanks for the heads up.

I have been reading and will try something simple to start out like making a mash.

Where do I start?

I am like most here and interested in creating some homebrew for personal consumption. Being a Southernboy by the grace of God, I think to start I should find a way to create a clear corn likker. I watched the popcorn video series, and plan to built that kind of still. Suggestions are always welcome...
