Re: First try

75 isn't too bad. My fermenter has been at about 75 - 77 for the last 2 weeks and it's looking good. Last SG read I did looked like it was drying out nicely, so the yeast is still doing it's job. I wouldn't let it drop too much below 75 though, maybe just wrap something around it? I have a nice thic...

Re: Sugar syrup

haha. Excellent. Break out the warm fuzzies. Well done my friend. We all started at the same point at sometime, a newbie. Being an ass to those that (you deem to be) asking "obvious" questions does not assist anyone. I didn't ask for my hand to be held or any step by step instructions. I a...

Re: Sugar syrup

thanks rad14701, still missed the point. Question was answered in the 3rd and 4th posts. If it is the way understand he wants to cook a sugar syrup ( pot is not big enough) then dilute to proper level after. if that's your saying OK. Sounds like your talking about inverting the sugar. Alot of people...

Re: Thump Keg

I have seen few thumpers being glass jars also. I would have thought this would not have been ideal, as I would imagine that the thumper would eventually get hot. If I was going to use a thumper, I would lean towards a stainless steel vessel for it (cooper is just too expensive here).

Re: The Whiskey Critic Thread

Not sure I would call myself a critic, maybe a lame drunk, but I have always enjoyed Wild Turkey, usually "Rare Breed" is what I would buy. Always preferred it over Jim Beam, can't tell you why though. I do have a 12 yo bottle of Glen Fiddick in my cupboard as well. Which is really nice fo...

Re: Sugar syrup

Thanks for the replies guys, so it seems to be safe. Planning to make up a batch this weekend, first one after much reading, so just wanted to make sure I wasn't going screw it up on the first attempt (at least that too early in the first attempt ;) )

Sugar syrup

I have seen lots of recipes call for dissolving 5kgs of sugar in 4l of boiling water (for example). Has anyone tried doing a syrup instead? I would imagine it wouldn't make much difference at all, just for people like myself, a huge ass pot is not accessible yet (it's on the cards). I could dissolve...

Re: electric keg help

You should grab a copy of the ebook "the compleat distiller" you fill find that dimmer switches should be avoided at all costs. They provide a workable solution for controlling the the boiler. They cover most of your questions actually, so it would be a good read for you

Why not use a glass carboy/demijonn for storing your alcohol ? I know they are more or less used for fermenting, but I figure they would make great storage/collecting containers. I have seem them 4L and 20L in size.

vodka - pot vs reflux.

Hi all, First time posting here, great effort on the site/forums and information. An excellent resource. I have a question regarding the reasoning why commercial vodka producers (for what I have seen of the more "popular" brands) would pot still vodka. I have read many times that vodka is ...
