Length of time to distill
How long does it take you to do a stripping run and then a spirit run with a pot still. I do a 5 gallon mash in a pot still with 3000 watts to heat and then reduce to 1000 watts or so through a 3/8" worm. It takes about 2-1/2 hours for the stripping run. I'll combine about 3 gallons of low wine...

Stripping / Spirit run
I normally due a stripping then a spirit run in my pot still with a 5 gallon sugar mash.
Do most folks just do one run on their pot still or do most do 2 or 3 distillations?

Red Oak
I'm running my pot still slow, a sugar wash, I couldn't find scraps of white oak so I ended up with Red Oak. I'm going to char the oak and seal it in a container with my distilliate (avg 100 proof), anout 1 gallon.
To try to get a mild flavor how long should I seal it?
Will it be worth it?

Blue-ish green floaties
Once in a while after I do a first distillation on my sugar wash, I will get a blueish green floaty stuff in it when it sits for a few weeks. I run the pot stll flat out on the first run and thoroughly clean it afterward. It is stored in glass containers. I filter this out and redistill and it taste...

Re: Single or double distill
I'm using a 20 quart pot with a 3/8" tube in shell condenser cooled by a water cooler (similiar to those at schools and office buildings). I pump water from a 5 gallon bucket into a water cooler then out to my condenser and back into my bucket. I circulate about 3 gallons of water. I set the th...

Re: Single or double distill
Goose Eye, Husker and Tater, Thanks, I've been doing sugar washes and anm now just stepping into UjSM. I've always done stripping runs on the sugar mash then redistilled to make it more neutral and was wondering if double distilling the UJSM would strip the flavor. I was going to single distill the ...

Re: Sugar Wash Recipe
This mix was a combination of parts of several recipes. I ended up with a final sg of 1.088, total volume was a little over 3 gallons. In this forum I found that an ideal ph was about 4.8. It took 4.5 tsp of citric acid to get a ph of 5.1 (using an electronic ph meter). I rehydrated the yeast per La...

Re: Activated Charcoal
THM, I think you hit the nail on the head. I did another stripping run on a new batch with my pot. I ran the still hard and fast. Then I did a spirit run slow and gentle and watched the ABV output. I was running about 75-80%ABV. One it started to drop I stopped collecting heads, kicked up the heat a...

Re: Activated Charcoal
The reason for trying the carbon is, I'm using a pot still, did a stripping run on several sugar based batches, combined for a spirit run.
Smells great, tastes great, just turns a little cloudy after I dilute it to 40%.

I've been reading the book on activated carbon and they talk about filling a tube with carbon and passing the distillate through it.
Can you also fill a glass jar with with 40-50% ABV and adding boiled carbon to the jar and let it sit a week?

Thanks for the responses. Yes, I was think about cabon filtering but I only got the cloudyness after I added filtered water to dilute the brew to 40%. Before I added the water the high proof distillate was crystal clear.

I made a simple sugar wash and ran the pot still up to temperature (~180 deg). Threw away the first 200 ml as forshots and collected the rest until the temperature came up to about 208 degrees. Washed the still and filled it with filtered water to about 1" above the element and added the distil...

The wash was a sugar, tomato paste, and bakers yeast. The wash was about 8% and about 60% after distilled. The smell may just be the etoh. It isn't an unpleasant odor, and tastes good.

I'm trying my first batch, pot still, sugar mash with tomato paste. When I distilled it I threw out the first 100 ml and collected about 1/2 gallon from 4 gallons of mash. The color is crystal clear, nothing floating, 70+% at the beginning of the collection 60+% by the end. There is a slight odor. I...

I pot distilled my first 'true' batch yesterday (I distilled a batch last week to clean and test my still). Sorry, I forgot to say that I dumped the wine and am using a sugar wash (BOKAOB's recipe), I have the discharge at 200 degrees and am getting a good flow, 2-3 drops per second.
