Re: used charred barrels
I know I am resurrecting a long retired thread but.... I recently found a local (5 mins away) place that has used red wine barrels. For 100 bucks I can get a re-shaved and toasted interior barrel delivered! They have no charring capabilities but will give me one with the ends knocked off so I can ch...

Re: Filtering with activated carbon?
Well....up until fairly recently most plastic water bottles contained BPA aka Bisphenol A. This BPA has been found to exert detectable hormone-like properties. So much so that Canada declared it a toxic substance and banned it from water bottles. Studies found that BPA actually leached into the wate...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
I haven't bothered spiritwalker. With taking the top layer of corn off and pouring in the new liquid it seems to get pretty mixed up anyhow. The ferment takes off with an hour for me, and in 4-5 hours is really rolling.

Re: infection question regarding barrels
I think Rod01 that the stave price was costly because they have their barrels made in the US by Gibbs. Chances are if you asked for some random trimmings of their oak, it would have been cheap or possibly free. As they saw their wood right there, you wouldn't need staves but simply pcs of oak that y...

I did not know that Dnderhead. Always thought that it was just carmel. Red wine was stored in it. Its a 53 gallon but I thought I would fill it and put it away for 10 yrs or so.
I suppose too...I could knock off the hoops and just use the oak in glass

I plan on making some more rum and I have a buddy with a used wine barrel.
Now as the coloring in rum is from caramel and not necessarily the barrel...can this be used for rum storage?

Re: infection question regarding barrels
Just dropped by the place in your link, blind drunk. Nice folks there. The lady of the house took me on a tour of their sawmill and barrel storage. They saw the logs right there and stack and age for 3 yrs min. The large barrels for wine get coopered at a place in Kentucky. The smaller barrels are c...

Thanks Husker.
Yup I have been running UJSSM for about 4 gens now. I just didn't know if you ran the bourbon as a sourmash or not.
I appreciate you getting back to me on this. Wish me luck!

faux bourbon question
I am thinking of doing a faux bourbon run Grain bill is 70% cracked corn 16% barley 14% wheat running 2nd generations onward with 33% backset and enough sugar to bring up the SG to 1.070 or so I am trying to get similar to makers mark as my buddies like this style, but not wanting to go all-grain Sh...

Re: infection question regarding barrels
I called them about 6 months ago, BD. At that point they said they were not selling any barrels in the size I was looking for (15 gallons) I hadn't looked at their website since then, but did so from your link. I notice now that they have the size listed under their whiskey barrel section. Ordering ...

infection question regarding barrels
I purchased a barrel from BarrelMill. On the instructions it mentioned that you should do certain things to help prevent an infection in the barrel...can't remember them offhand though. Can an infection even live in cask strength alcohol? Or are they mainly referring to wine and other low alcohol li...

Re: wheat bourbon experiment
Maker's Mark Grain Bill: 70% corn, 16% malted barley, 14% wheat. 33% sourmash. That will get you there. Odin...when you posted this, did you mean 33% backset of sourmash? or did you mean to leave 33% of the grain bill in the fermenter with each successive ferment? Thanks man...gotta try this one nex...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Thanks Stilly, I have had quite a few pens in the past and know they are a pain in the butt. I dropped my last one and broke the bulb on it, so I just bought a cheaper one for now and have all the calibration stuff already. I have 5lbs of CC on its way My fermenter is a 20 gallon so I was curious as...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Yup...I did read them Baron4406 and a PH pen is on its way (should be here on tues along with calcium carbonate). I just wondered the question of boiling with traces of sugar still remaining as that way you never really lose the sugar at all, if you recycle 100% of the backset. Once the pen and calc...

Good point Yankeeclear.. Actually my wash is around 1.015 and its only been a week so I expect it to drop a bit yet...twas an interesting thought though. I can't see it making too much a problem though for the external heat guys. I have boiled sugar water on the stove a few times with no problems......

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
I am currently having the same problem as a few on here with washes getting slower. Thanks guys....I had only ever run sugar washes for neutrals before. I will add them all together, dilute and run them at once. Well two runs actually due to the amount.

combininb various feints for neutal?
I have probably 25 gallons of various feints (heads and tails), ugssm, sf, rum, all bran, bw...etc
Can these all be combined to run in my boka for neutral, or should they be left separate?

I had the same problem with my molasses as many.... Feed store molasses. They told me that it was a mix of cane sugar and blackstrap. Re: sweetfeed whisky
Maybe it is just me but my wash always stays a fairly bright yellow, not brown. I do equal weight sweetfeed to sugar, and run with 20% backset. Every time I scoop out 50% of the grain by weight and replace with the same weight in grain plenty of molasses in the starting grains....plenty brown and ve...
