Properly Grounding a Potentiometer (aka Pot)

I'm working on an SSR build and have a question about properly grounding a Pot in the metal enclosure project box. There is a little post sticking out of the Pot. Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 9.30.51 AM.png I'm confused as to it's function. I thought it was to ground it, but when the pot is mounted the...

Re: Cadco 2,000 watt LKR-220 Hot Plate Mod - Sold by MileHi

OK....I'm working on a new mod for the same hot plate. I bought a SSR, potentiometer and amp meter and need a little help connecting the dots. I have wired this in a few different configurations to trouble shoot, but don't know if maybe I have a bad part instead of incorrect wiring. How do I wire in...

Re: Cadco 2,000 watt LKR-220 Hot Plate Mod - Sold by MileHi

I never got the speed controller to work properly, so I abandoned the hot plate and went back to my propane setup. I'm finalizing my SSR Controller build (similar to the MK5500) for a heating element to add directly to my milk can. After that is finished, I'll convert the wiring on the hot plate to ...

Re: Won't drop past 1.022

It's still a little sweet. All natural, it was 1.030...I bumped it up to 1.050 with sugar and now its finished at 1.022ish. It took a long time to collect (2) 6-gallon buckets worth of plums and I want to get as much as possible. Here is the link to the thread I am documenting: http://homedistiller....

Won't drop past 1.022

I fermented 5 gallons of plum juice with E1118 and it won't drop anymore. I've stirred it up good and added more yeastmandmstill nothing. I added bakers yeast, twice... And it only dropped 2'pts. Am I getting a false reading? It's in a temp controlled chest freezer at 75 degrees now. It was cooler f...

Great project. There are some pretty robust iPhone apps for the homebrewer which you could probably use for ideas. I use BeerSmith software on my PC and it is excellent.

5 gallons of cherry plum

I've got 5 gallons of cherry plum juice fermenting as we speak with EC1118. I started out with 2 6-gallon buckets of picked ripe fruit, let it ripen for a few weeks in the bucket then hit it with a paint stirrer on a drill...all juice. The skins floated and formed a cap and the seeds sank to the bot...

I ran about 4-5 generations and it was great. I do have all the separate ingredients now and plan to start a new batch in a month or so. Right now I'm working on some plum brandy in the ferementer right now.

Re: Slivovitz - aka Plum Brandy Recipe (5 Gallon)

I weighed the bucket and it's 40lbs, at 9.5% sugar by weight that is 3.8lbs of sugar. Assuming 3.8lbs of sugar will make a 6 gallon wash with an SG of 1.029 or 4.5% alcohol. I'd like to get it up above 1.050...so I'm not that far off. 3 lbs of sugar will bump the SG up by 23pts on a 6 gallon wash, w...

Re: dunder?

Great explanation...from Washashore! I spent hours and hours reading the various threads on Dunder and dunder pits, which I suggest you do, too. You won't have any dunder until after your first run. Also, you will probably hear about the "lees". This is the spent yeast left over in the fermenter. Ty...

Re: Distilling Beer, without hops. Will the beer style transl

Thanks for the link and heads-up on the review. I think I'm going to make a wort with the base malt of the beer only, ferment and possible run through a filter, then do a stripping run. Once I make the collections I will dilute to 40% then steep in the speciality grains and spices. To avoid extracti...

Re: Plate tree from stacked sight glasses...is this possible

Nice build thread...I'll be following that closely! I've had success with dealing directly with manufacturers in China. Some of them have a low MOQ (minumum order quantity). Typically, they can use DHL for samples before messing around with importing pallets. I was contemplating importing a bunch of...

Plate tree from stacked sight glasses...is this possible?

Theory here...could it be possible to create a stacked plate tree from only sight glasses? It would definitely look cool. The plates could be sandwiched between the sight glass Tri-clamps. They make these things up to 6" diameter. Thoughts? http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r599/BrewVegas/11d5a2c1...

Just curious, how are the interior plate soldered on flutes? Do you get to them through the sight glass hole? Or, are you just soldering the downcomers to hold it together?

Re: Distilling Beer, without hops. Will the beer style transl

Hops are used for three reasons: aroma, bittering and flavoring. In a typical boil, bittering hops are added for the full 60 miniutes, flavoring hops are added in the last 15-30 minutes, while aroma hops are added in the last 5 minutes/flame out or dry hopping. The aroma hops is what gives you that ...

Link is fixed, thanks. You know, I didn't think about it like gin. Maybe I can add them to the basket on my still. That's the cone shaped part in the pic below. Distilling Beer, without hops. Will the beer style translate?

Everything that I have read about distilling beer speaks to the problems caused by the oils from the hop additions. Has anyone tried to pot still a beer like a hefeweizen, then dry hop it...maybe a little orange zest? I'm curious as to how any of the flavor profiles translate after distilling.

Re: Question on boiling in fermenter

You can ferment in your boiler, but it will leave behind a layer of dead yeast and funk on the bottom of the fermenter that would scorch and burn on the bottom when you run your burner. You can easily ferment as you wish, then rack off into whatever pots and pans you have to hold the wash until you ...
