Re: Still spirits reflux heater control
Sorry to potentially ask a n00b question Rod, but is there any installation involved with this unit? I had a look at the link you provided, and it looks like it could be useful, but I've got no experience or training in electronics at all apart from replacing light globes >< If it's just a plug and ...

Re: Temperature control in stillspirits super reflux
Cheers for the reply mate, much appreciated! :D I checked the ABV% as I was going, as well as tasting and making sure heads/tails weren't present, in addition to measuring the ABV% of the finished product (Bottle by bottle). It finished up at about 89% ABV, which I thought was OK. I was just a bit c...

Temperature control in stillspirits super reflux
I spent this morning running sugarwash low wines through my reflux still, which is a 5l still spirits unit. I'd previously run the wash through the same still, detuned to be a regular pot still. My main question is whether or not the temperature reading is the same when running low wines as to when ...

Re: Vodka Essence?!?
It's my understanding that the vodka essence stuff is used because the still spirits essenses use carbon treated turbo yeast sugar wash. 'cause you're running the distillate through the carbon, it removes all of the flavour, so the vodka essence bottle claims to "Replace lost esters required in...

Re: Cactus Mash
Doesn't matter if it's blue agave or not, as long as it's agave full stop you're safe. Blue agave is the cacti you use for making tequila, whereas you can use any kind of agave for making mezcal, which is almost the same drink. Mezcal isn't so popular in mexico, seeing as it doesn't have as pure a f...

Re: Early distillate?
Are you talking about the distillate coming off at a temp that might seem really early? It's pretty normal for that to happen, esp. in a potstill. At 45-48 degrees, everything you collect is foreshots, utterly toxic undrinkable stuff which I collect to put in the fireplace outside :D . You don't wan...

Re: Oats in a mash
Thin then use that to cook another? I don't quite get what you mean. Is that a bit like a DWWG? I think you could cook the oats and get the flavour out, actually, sounds alot easier than mashing the whole thing :D Might give that a go. Gotta wait for the DWWG I threw on the other day to finish thoug...

Re: Banana"ish" smell
Yeah, I got that banana-ish smell from my rum wash a few weeks back, came out really really strong smelling in the foreshots, but eased up a bit in the hearts. I let it sit for a bit though, and then redistilled and it came out OK. It oaked out nice

Oats in a mash
First things first, howdy! New to the forum, but done a fair bit of reading on diffrent mashes and worts, particuarly on the parent site. Just wanted to ask, what kind of oats are best in an oat whiskey mash? Finding stockfeed grains and whatnot is hard in my area, but can I use the kind of oats (E....
