Re: diffuser plate for propane burner
The burner I have now is stainless steel. I bought it specifically thinking it would be easier to clean/maintain than the previous burner (standard steel) which started producing soot before I replaced it. I guess with extended/prolonged use over time, they just don't maintain a good quality flame. ...

diffuser plate for propane burner
Has anyone ever used one? What are your experiences with it? My once nice stainless steel boiler ashes over badly each time I run my still, and a fine layer of soot starts to accumulate in the garage. I make sure I clean both the burner and the boiler off as best as I can after each run with a scour...

Re: sugar wash stuck/few questions
no idea. I reckon that's a problem. I'd guess the tap water would be close to neutral and if there aren't any acidic additives to the turbo yeast packet, I suppose the wash is close to 7. Sugar is neutral correct? It's strange though. If anything, the well water had to of been slightly basic with th...

sugar wash stuck/few questions
I recently moved into town from a place just out of town that had a well instead of municipal water. Out there, I had no problem getting washes to ferment out completely in a weeks time with the well water (which really wasn't all that hard. I could drink it fine chilled). My most recent wash, howev...

Re: packing a reflux column
I'm only managing to collect distilate at 80% purity. I've got a thirty inch column with a two inch diameter (on the short side I know) and I've been using copper scrubbers to completely fill the column until where the cooling lines run through near the top of the column. Should I be doing this (pa...

Re: Tell us about your mistakes.
I got one that could have ended up very bad. I ran up the heat on the cooker to try and get the wash to distilling temp, left the still unattended for a short time, and came back to find alcohol running down the side of the still and onto the burner. luckily most of the stuff coming out of the still...

Re: Is there a way to REDUCE the efficiency of a Reflux still?
don't run any water through the column and don't pack it with anything. add a thump keg if you don't want to run it twice.

I've always been a fan of men and women of the frontier, rebels, southern, western, and appalachain cultures as well as the ideals of the founding fathers. Re: woman + tattoos
old thread, but since it got bumped, I'll put in my two cents. the tramp stamp is a classic turnoff for me. don't matter how smart and beautiful and engaging and sweet the girl is either. that's just bad advertisement. I'm not a fan of tats in general (on guys or gals), but I could deal with a woman...

Re: lowest proof that'll burn
I did a little experiment. The hootch I got on hand is cut to 80 proof. On a teaspoon, it took 4 or 5 seconds with a lighter before it burned on it's own. It then continued to burn a beautiful blue flame for a good 20 seconds. With the lights out, it sure looks pretty. What was left on the spoon tas...

Brown Sugar Wash?
Anyone experiment around with brown sugar to make a rum or neutral spirit? Could you taste the differences between brown, regular sugar, and molasses in their finished product? What I don't understand is why brown sugar is more expensive than white. Don't they have to run cane sugar through all sort...

Re: some general questions
Will do. I didn't realize how sensitive the column was to wind (however slight it may be). thanks for the info, and I'll be sure to let what's left over in the boiler for 24 hours before dumping it and rinsing it out with water.

Re: some general questions
I suppose it could have been the wind. I don't remember it being particularly breezy that day and I certainly don't know how sensitive the still/burner is to a slight wind. I guess that's something to keep in mind next time a run.

some general questions
What do you guys use to clean the boiler after a run? Hot water only? A weak mixture of bleach and water? Dawn dish soap? I've got a stainless steel reflux that I purchased from Mile Hi Distillers (good company to do business with if you are in the market for a quality still). I don't want to ruin m...
